So, I applied on Nov 15, and have been receiving interviews, many in California. Not top IM programs, but still pretty decent. I'm an allopath, average board scores, bottom quintile of my class, some research pubs (including one first author), high pass in my Sub-I, honors in surgery, all else Pass.

What I'm wondering is, if I have been getting interview offers this late in the game, does that mean that I have better chances of being ranked by a program and matching at my top choice? My reasoning is, by the time I applied, all the interview slots were mostly filled, and thus a program must really like you on paper to even give you one of the few remaining spots.

Thoughts?

It could also mean that other people started cancelling interviews so spots open. Who knows. I used to think that late interviews were a bad sign ie they were the second batch but there is no evidence to suggest that is true at all. I've heard people like Iversen say that early applicants aren't as carefully selected as the later applicants but there is no way he can prove that and there is no way that anyone can disprove it. I think it's such us trying to put a logical explanation into a process that seems, to us at least, random. One thing I would recommend is not ranking programs based on whether you think they would rank you higher or not. I have to keep reminding myself on that fact. Hope this was helpful mate.
