here's my situation. i talked to my advisor but she's not helpful i thuoght i'll post my info here.

i'm an md phd @ columbia p&s, graduating next june. i have fulfilled the minimum requirement with phd, (1 first author in j. neurosci, 1 short review paper) worked for a mid ranged researcher. 1 honor for first and second year (although first/second year most grades are pass/fail) and honored some of my core clerkships and neuro sub-i. i dunno if i should do an away rotation or not.

step i: 230

don't know if/when i'll take step ii, but prolly not before interviewing.

i'm shooting for big name academic programs, specifically partners, columbia and ucsf. is this going to be very much a crap shoot for me? should i do an away rotation? i'd be ok with hopkins or penn as well, but my financee lives in nyc and has a job here. she's from boston and may be willing to move there.

thanks.

John Doe,
I would not bend over backwards to arrange an away rotation just to make yourself more competitive at a particular program. You have have a solid background and will get interviews at most if not all the programs you mentioned. I look forward to hearing your post-interview impressions of the Big Three. I ended up ranking all of them as well as Penn and Hopkins. I would have been happy to match at any of those programs.

As for Step 2, take it at your convenience. I took it in January and got my score back after match day.
