Hi Guys,

This is my first time posting to SDN. So I am in a dilemma here. I am a senior in college thinking about applying to MD schools or maybe even DO schools as well. Currently, going to take a gap year. I have great ECs, including a solid pub, great idea for PS, great MCAT and I am pretty sure I will have solid rec letters as well. The problem is my "low GPA". My cumulative GPA is 3.68 while my science GPA is a 3.53. However, I have a solid upward trend (my sophomore year really screwed up my GPA) otherwise I had a 3.8+ every year in difficult courses. I took my MCAT a few months and received a 523. I was thrilled with my score but I know my GPA is not that great. Which MD schools or DO schools should I apply to? Should I do an SMP or post-bac to raise my GPA instead? Thank you!

As a fellow future applicant I'm not the most qualified person to answer this, but from my long time lurking on this forum I think you definitely don't need to apply DO with that MCAT. Your GPA is right around the average for most schools, maybe a tiny bit lower, so you should definitely receive some good news from MD schools!
Hi,

Thank you so much for your reply! I am just really worried about my science GPA(I raise to 3.56ish max) but I feel it's on the lower end but again I have a strong upward trend.

New Jersey.
You are a strong candidate for your NJ state schools so apply to all 3 of them. Other schools where you could receive interviews include:
Boston University
Tufts
Vermont
Hofstra
Einstein
Mount Sinai
NYU
Rochester
Pittsburgh
Jefferson
Case Western
Washington University
Duke
Cincinnati
Virginia Commonwealth
Miami
St. Louis
Tulane

Thank you so much for your reply. How about schools like Columbia, Vanderbilt, Stanford, UCSF, UCLA, Cornell? Do you think I have a shot at those? I have worked at one of these schools that I have listed above too. Or will my low gpa prevent me from getting an interview? Thank you!

As long as you apply to your 3 NJ state schools you can add any other schools that appeal to you. Those schools you listed are very competitive but you could receive an interview at any of them due to your high MCAT.

Thank you so much for all your advice!
