So I am graduating this May, but I will need to retake some of my premed classes that I did not do so hot in. So I will not be applying for a year. If my applications are in by November 2014, but I still need to take some classes in the second semester and I have already sent my apps, will medical schools accept my second semester courses? Or will I have to get all of my retakes done before the application deadline?

I am sorry if this sounds like an obvious question! I was just confused.

You need prerequisites done by matriculation, not application, so in that sense it's ok if coursework is done in Spring 2015 when applying summer 2014.

However, spring 2015 coursework is FAR too late to have any bearing on the admission cycle that begins June 2014, so if you need those grades to show improvement, it is too late and you are better off waiting another year.

Or are you asking about Spring 2014 coursework? Spring 2014 coursework should be done in time to be on your applications if you are applying next year.

I will be applying for matriculation for Fall 2015. So after I graduate, I will be taking courses during Fall 2014 and Spring 2015.

So it will work out if I get all my ducks in row by Spring 2015, and then apply for Fall 2015 admission! Thank you! 🙂

Sorry, I don't think your plan will work out. If you are applying for Fall 2015, you will be submitting your application Summer 2014. Your application GPA will only go through Spring 2014. By the time you finish even your Fall 2014 classes, it will be too late. To give you some perspective, many schools have already sent out many rejections and it's only the end of October in the application cycle for students who want to enter Fall 2014. I would argue that if you are set on applying for Fall 2015 then you shouldn't waste your time re-taking classes - medical schools won't care. The only time it might matter is if you are waitlisted and you have an awesome Fall 2014 semester.

Acceptances go out March at the latest (though they start in October) so your Spring 2015 courses are 100% useless....

My advice is to apply Summer of 2015 for entry in the Fall of 2016.

I agree...I feel like the OP only read part of my post. Taking prereqs during an application year is generally something done by people who have no other holes in their application, so their qualifications aren't in doubt--they just need to check a few additional boxes with that final english class or whatever. If you need to show improvement from previous bad performance taking the classes during the application year will not work.

Oh. I think I misunderstood what was said before. I will need to show improvement in the classes that I retook for the first year after I graduate and THEN apply. Fall 2016 should be my goal year to matriculate.

Sorry to bring this up again!! But what if I took the classes I needed over Summer 2014? Would it be feasible to apply for Fall 2015 matriculation?

Also, would retakes at a community college be looked down upon?

If you want it to factor into your GPA, then you'd either have to delay your application until you got your grades back (don't recommend), or send updates later in the season. It will not be factored into the GPA calculated by AMCAS, though.

And yes, generally if you don't do well at a university class, taking the same class at a community college would be looked down upon.

What I was thinking was that I would be able to take the classes I would need to retake at my hometown community college over the summer, then get my grades (for those classes) back in August 2014. I thought that if medical school applications open up over the summer, the retakes would still be in my gpa? Because then I was thinking that I would be able to get all my applications in by Oct/Nov 2014. Would that plan be feasible in terms of scheduling?? Or am I just being super hopeful right now??

Again, thank you guys for your patience! The application schedules are a bit of a puzzle for me.

Your grades need to be on your transcript when you send it to be verified by AMCAS. When you submit your application, you get in line for verification. This year, there was some crazy hold up, so people who submitted their application in June still weren't verified by the end of the July. Ideally, for your best chance, you should have everything, including secondaries, in by the end of August when schools start back up (which means you should submit your primary application to AMCAS no later than July, but preferably June). So aiming to have your applications done Oct/Nov is not going to land you your best chance, especially since it already sounds like you have GPA issues, and MD schools don't do grade replacement.

OH! Ok. I thought I might have had more time... So June/July should be my application deadline.
