Hi everyone, I'm new to this, but I think its great b/c a lot of people have the same questions as I do!
Anyway, I am in the process of applying to opt schools ( I have already applied to a few), I graduated this year in psychology (bio emphasis) with a 3.7 and (3.5 Science), but I was a transfer student so most of my science classes came from a community college. I am currently taking Microbio right now (which is going good), and am going to take anatomy and biochem starting january. I have a couple of years experience in opthalmolgy (secretary stuff) and 6 months OD shadowing (2 diff ones). And I'm just super worried b/c I havent taken the OATS yet!! I am planning on taking them at the latest early January (hopefully late Dec.), Do you think that will be too late?
Also do I have a chance of getting an interview w/out my OATS?

Sorry this is so long, any advice would help 😳 Thanks!

Hi I can understand all the worry since I just went through this whole process. The date you wanted to take the test is a little late, BUT will not be too late as long as you make sure that you've studied hard enough where you are pretty confident you can meet whatever school's minimum requirement (SUNY's is 320) and NOT have to retake the test (you have to wait 90 days to retake the test, and it takes three weeks from the day you take the test, to send over to the schools you're applying to)

Your amount of experience sounds good so I wouldn't worry too much about that, but in terms of getting an interview, I am not sure how your chances are of getting an interview without the OAT scores. It really depends on how everything else looks on your record (decent GPA, experience, decent PS, etc), and how many invitations they have extended to students who have already interviewed. Just do the best you can and good luck!

I have to retake the test and told PCO I would retake the test in Early January and they said that would be fine.

I'm just curious how long it takes for schools to reply after interviews?

and... Why haven't I been denied to any schools yet?

Do schools wait for awhile before sending out denying letters of acceptance?

Yes you have to wait a while (1 month or so?) for the acceptance letter from PCO. I dont know about the rejection letter, though. It's faster for other schools. SUNY took 2 days to reply after interview.

Hi Insomnia23, I saw your OAT scores from your other posts and they seem fine. Why does PCO want you to retake the test? Your scores are the average scores of accepting applicants according to ASCO website. I am also waiting for PCO and I have very similar OAT scores as you. If I were to retake my OATs, it would be in mid February. Would that be too late?

Yes, it's possible to get an interview without your OATs.

I am also worried about my chances of acceptance. My gpa is low, 3.08 (a little higher for science) but my OAT scores were good. TS 380, AA 360, OChem 400, Bio 340, Physics 360, GenChem 370, RC 350, and QR 340. What do you think, do I have a chance? I just turned in my first application and I intend to finish the rest tomorrow.

Congrats on your OAT scores. They will definitely help you out. Your GPA is not that low. I'm sure that there has been other applicants that had lower and were accepted. I had the opposite situation you had; low OAT scores, but high GPA. You could always look on the school's website and see what the previous class GPA was.
