How does this work exactly?
I plan to apply to anesthesia residency programs later this year. Some are 4-year programs that include gy1, others are 3-year programs starting with gy2, that require you to separately arrange a transitional or prelim year.
Since I would like to apply to BOTH the 3 and 4 year programs, this necessitates also applying to transitional/prelim programs.

How does this work, exactly, within the match process? Obviously if I match a 4-year program, I won't be able to also match a transitional/prelim program. Still, I will need to apply to these just in case I match a 3-year program.

Help!

Theres not a whole lot more too it than what you said. If you match at a four year program, then you have no problems. However, it is possible to match at a prelim year somewhere and not match to a three year spot, in which case you would have to scramble, it is also possible to match a 3 year spot, and not match a prelim year in which case you would have to scramble for an intern year. Many of the 3 year programs have an intern year that you are pretty much guaranteed to match into if you match there three year program, although you may not find this out until the interview. Applying to three year programs means you have to interview at quite a few more places for intern years usually. Good luck.

How do I indicate that I am ranking three kinds of programs?

Is there a separate rank order list for the gy1 year programs?

What happens with my committment to the gy1 program I match at if I also match a 4 year program that includes gy1?

For each anesthesia program you list, you make a separate rank list of prelim programs. So, for the four year places, you make no list, for each of the three year places, you make lists.

So, if you match into a four year program, you are done. If you match in a three year program, the computer looks at the prelim rank list you have associated with that program and runs through the match algorithm.

At least this is how I think it works. I did not actually do this, but this is what I glean from classmates. Someone can correct me if I am wrong.

You are exactly right. You can also make a prelim match list for the case where you don't match in any of your anesthesia choices.
