A dean at my school was talking to us and said if you apply to derm with a "B average" you're probably not going to get a residency spot.

I'm not currently applying (still several years away if I do apply), but just curious if such a generalized statement is really true. I know A's are better than B's, but is it this black and white?

This is true. Most schools are P/F in the first two years as i understand it. Clinical honors carry more weight. I think you're being too hard on yourself. Just relax a bit and do the best you can. I know this is hard because I was trying to score the A's just like you. I wish I took a bit more time to enjoy myself.

When I first approached my Dean about applying to derm, she looked at my grades (nothing to brag about) and wasn't terribly supportive. But later, when I approached the subject again by presenting all of the *other* things that round out the application (research, clinical papers, step1 scores, etc.) the response was much more positive.

"very few schools grade people based on A's or B'"

Really? Mine does. So most schools are doing P/F?I wish we had P/F

P/F is really nice. I'm convinced it cuts down on 'gunnerism' when you know you get a P just like the next guy or gal. My class was emailing out anatomy study guides and the like 2 weeks into school. That makes for such a better learning environment. However, it is true that I have not first hand compared it to a traditional grading system school, so my opinion is just conjecture.

we have people that email out study guides and stuff too, gunners aren't a big problem. I have just been shocked at the ridiculously high test averages. at this rate i could have a solid B GPA and end up in the bottom quarter.

I thought they still ranked you in the P/F system, meaning there was a numerical grade behind your Pass (or in some cases Honors grade). If this is the case all you are doing is masking what someones performance actually is (as in the previous post, when everyone is killing it your numerical grade matters more than whether you got an A or not b/c something like 1/3 of the class gets an A too). My school was old fashioned and people emailed out study guides as well....
