I got a 32 on the MCAT (3.9 GPA, 2 pubs--one first author). If I submit my apps now indicating my intent to retake the MCAT on August 7, will this be too late in the game?

It would be pretty late as you'd be complete at schools in mid-Sept. No telling what that could mean.

How many schools are you applying to? What schools are you applying to as well?

It's definitely not early..could hurt you a little.

MSTP are very competitive so I feel as if getting the MCAT in Sept. can hurt you compared to others.

Not worth the risk. As stated above, MSTP's are already highly competitive, and the ones that roll over to MD upon rejection will virtually destroy your chances of getting into an MD program so late into the cycle.

Was the 32 significantly lower than what you were expecting based on practice tests?

I ask because a 32 is not an absolute deal breaker for MD/PhD programs. Ideal? No, but you can overcome it with a good GPA and solid research background. In your position, I would just apply now (to a range of schools) and think hard about the retake. I'm not saying you shouldn't do it…I'm just saying that if your choice is between a borderline score and a late application, I'm really not sure which would be worse for you. If you aren't absolutely sure your score will go up significantly, it may be best to just accept the 32.

A 32 is lower than the average matriculating MCAT for MD/PhD programs. Unless you have a truly unique story, I would strongly suggest you consider taking a gap year to avoid hurting your chances as a potential re-applicant.

Are you dead-set on attending a MSTP? If so, a 32 is on the lower end, however certainly NOT insurmountable. There are some very good MD-PhD programs that with your GPA and research experience you would definitely be competitive for. Like others have mentioned, I would really think long and hard about submitting with a late MCAT score.

It might be more advantageous to apply now OP. Just make sure the other parts of your application are solid, secondaries are good, and your interviewing skills are awesome! You also don't want to risk possibly doing worse on your re-take if you're stressed with time and secondaries and whatnot. Good luck!

Yes, my practice test average was a 39. I did not feel well during my test, and scored the lowest on VR, which was typically my highest section. I'm also trying to get into a top program--MCAT is really the only thing holding me back.

Why not crush the MCAT and get your 39 without stressing over applications this year. Improve yourself even more and apply next year. It would be less stressful and you'd have a much higher chance with submission early and a great MCAT

If that's the case, focus on getting that score this time around. Forget the app. 32-39/3.9 late app is dangerous, even though it's better than 32/3.9 early app. HOWEVER, 32-39/3.9 early app would be terrific for your chances next year. Don't be rash and rush it for the year.
