could someone ,please, clarify the application process to PG 2-3-4 programs?
do you apply in sept. 2006 for july 2008 and secure prelim. separately or do you apply to prelim. now and for 2-3-4 later when doing internship?

You have to apply for both the pgy 2-4 program and potential prelim/transitional program when you are an MSIV (or the year before you start if you are not coming directly from med school).

taken from http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=100937&highlight=2-4

"2-3-4 programs require a transitional/intern year in addition to the regular program. You may do the year there or elsewhere and typically it is a separate application process. When ranking you have a separate ROL for trans programs for EACH EM program you rank (although I assume you can just have 1 if you want). These programs are different than 1-4 programs which include the intern year at their program. The match process is the same except for having to apply for trans/intern spots additionally. You apply to them as a fourth year student the same as for other programs and the match is the same as well. You could mix 2-3-4, 1-4, and 1-3 programs in the same ROL if you wished."

That being said When I interviewed at Ole Miss several of my fellow interviewees were pgy-1s interviewing for a spot for that year so it can work both ways but the majority of the 2-4 spots are matched during the msiv as described above.

thank you very much! 👍

I go to a 2-3-4 program, it's really not as complicated as it sounds. You just apply to prelim programs as well as ER programs. when you are making your match order list on ERAS, and you select a program that is 2-3-4, it automatically kicks you to a second list where you rank your preferences for prelim year that you would want to do for that program. then you continue on with your original match order list until you select another 2-3-4 program. It wont interefere at all with your overall preference list. As far as applying to prelim programs, my advice is to only interview at a few. there are alot of good ones out there that arent that selective, and you might not need it anyway. Your main focus should be on the ER programs.

I agree, I ended up just interview at about 2 prelim places and if I didnt' match in that I felt there were plenty that went unfilled. Then again I know some folks who said they had trouble securing a preliminary spot in the scramble...but they did get one. I would make sure and apply to as many as you think you are competitive at. Some community IM programs are not as competitive in getting a prelim spot, so you can try to interview at a few of those (not as backup, you may actually like their schedule or program).
