Hello, So I applied to several school, all of which do not require the PCAT because I haven't taken it, and its not offered until the summer. I applied to LECOM PA and FL, MCPHS, and Cali Northstate. I would like some input on if these are good enough stats or if I should start preparing for the PCAT and plan to apply the next cycle.
Bachelors in Biology from University of Michigan
Cumulative GPA: 2.96
Biology Club event coordinator for 2 years.
Over 400 hours volunteering at Karmanos Cancer Institute (over the course of 2 years 2013-2015)
Over 250 hours of volunteering at the Burgers School for the Autistic (over the course of 4 years 2007-2011)
Over 150 hours of volunteering at soup kitchens and salvation army (over the course of 4 years 2007-2011)
Over 500 hours of coaching JV basketball at local church (over the course of 7 years non paid volunteering)
Pharmacy Technician at CVS/Pharmacy for 18 months with 30 hours/week (working on becoming licensed pharmacy tech within the next month or so.)
Assistant manager at Gas Station for almost 5 years (June 2015 will be 5 years)
*All of these I can get proof from their respective supervisor.

also i had 3 really good letter of recommendations, 1 from my pharmacist and 2 science professors and i also have what i think a really good personal statement (been reviewed -7 drafts- by school advisor, peers, and english professor).

I am just really nervous about getting in, my application was completed and submitted on Feb 6, 2015, so I know time is against me.

Worst case scenario I take the PCAT in the summer and reapply for the next cycle, but my concern is my chances for this current cycle.

So i'm looking to see if theres anyone who has experience with this or heard someone getting in with similar stats. I do realize that everyone is different so any input would be great. I will be posting more information on what and when I start hearing back from school as they arrive.

Thanks,

-Nervous Student

First 2 things that caught my interest. You have a really low GPA, not even B average. However you do have a lot of extracurricular -> maybe too much and reason for your bad grades?

Don't be too anxious you'll get in somewhere if you apply to a lot of the lower tiered schools and doing decent at your interview/essays. The CVS tech job is really great as it shows you already have dabbled into pharmacy and it'll definitely help when your in pharmacy school as you will already be in the CVS system -> automatically an intern.

What would be concerning personally is your interests. During your 18 months of pharmacy do you see yourself doing something pharmacy related? Don't do it just for the money as you might not know the job prospect for pharmacists is definitely more competitive than it used to be due to openings of new schools.

If I was the admissions committee I would definitely question your ability to even stay in school due to your low GPA. Cs do get you degrees, however if you flunk any class twice your out of the program at least for my program. I know a guy (maybe in his early 30s) that had 8-9 years of tech experiences in nuclear, hospital, and chain pharmacy settings who couldn't after 3 tries matriculate to my school (public) since he had a sub-par GPA I'm assuming as the reason. So it might be a long shot if your planning on going somewhere decent.

So overall I have had quick turn around times, and I will keep this updated. If you have any question feel free to contact me and I will be more than willing to get back to you, I know this is a rather strenuous process.

In the mean time, I have to prepare for these interviews :smack:🙂

I am back with an update.

I changed my interview dates a little bit so theres the new ones.

Interview Dates:
Date for LECOM Pennsylvania Interview: 3/24/2015
Date for LECOM Florida Interview: 4/24/2015
Date for California NorthState Interview: 4/17/2015

Yesterday I had my interview at LECOM - Penn and let me first say that it an amazing campus. So nice and small and theres everything around it. The interview itself was quick and very laid back. It started out with an introduction, then went on to a tour of the campus, then the interview itself, then a presentation about the curriculum and financial aid. I also had to take a written assessment at the end because I didn't take the PCAT.

Now what was asked during my interview is probably on your mind, well I'll fill you in. But first let me tell you that it was so relaxed, this was my first interview and I was happy of how smoothly it went. It was a group interview with about 5 people and 2 interviewers.

Now the questions:
1. Tell me about yourself and include why pharmacy, why LECOM, and tell me something about yourself not in your application.
2. What is the role of a pharmacist
3. Senario 1: A lady comes in and she has several prescriptions for her son, she cannot afford some of them, what would you do?
4. Senario 2: (there was another one here but I cannot remember it at the moment)
5. Senario 3: You're in class and you see someone cheating, what do you do?
6. Give me an example, a specific example of when you were doing group work and someone was not doing their part, what did you do?
7. This is an accelerated program what makes you think you can handle it.
8. Are there any questions you have for us?

And we basically went around and we jumped in and answered the questions. It was about an hour long, not bad at all.
The writing assignment was very easy, you just had to answer a simple question and thats all.

If you are worried about this interview I would breathe easy, cause its not as bad as you think.

I will update again once I hear back I will report back!
any questions just let me know!!

Alright I'm back with another update.

Interview Dates:
Date for MCPHS - Worcester Interview: 4/10/2015
Date for LECOM Florida Interview: 4/24/2015
Date for California NorthState Interview: 4/17/2015 (I withdrew from this school and therefore didn't attend the interview)
Date for Chapman University Interview: 5/1/2015

So since I last reported I received 2 more interviews, one in Massachusetts and the other one in California.

MCPHS
I attended the MCPHS interview and it was another great school. Much larger than LECOM-Penn but still very nice campus. Everything is up to date and there are a lot of opportunities around the school from what I was told and the near by hospitals.

The interview itself was very short and quick. The Dr. that gave me interview was very helpful.
The interview started out with her telling me about the school and the curriculum and what it entails. The house work and the load of material I would need to be able to handle. Then she went on to ask me a few very basic questions:
1. Why pharmacy?
2. Why MCPHS?
3. A senario and how I was able to solve it.
Thats about it. We talked a lot about the pharmacy field and how its evolving. It was very laid back and she was very attentive to everything I was saying, taking notes and writing everything out, and she did sneak in questions throughout the conversation and I caught on to answer them right away. That whole process was about an hour.
Then she took me on a tour of the school, there are 3 buildings 2 of which are connected.
After that I had to do a writing sample which was much tricker than LECOM-Penn's writing sample but still not a big deal.
And then I was done. My interview was at 9:30am and I walked in at about 9:15 and I was walking out the door by 11:20am.

I am humbled to say that today, 4/17/2015, a week after the interview I received my acceptance letter for MCPHS.

LECOM-Penn
I received a letter from them a week after my interview and I was placed on the alternate list and that they will contact me up to the first day of classes if a spot opens up. Since it is my fist choice I accepted to be on the list and now I will wait.

I will be back after my other 2 interviews with updates!!
Feel free to ask me any questions! 🙂

Another Update!

Interview Dates:
Date for MCPHS - Worcester Interview: 4/10/2015
Date for LECOM Florida Interview: 4/24/2015
Date for California NorthState Interview: 4/17/2015 (I withdrew from this school and therefore didn't attend the interview)
Date for Chapman University Interview: 5/1/2015 (Withdrew from this schools and therefore didn't attend the interview)

MCPHS

My update for this school is that I have received a scholarship of $7,000/year for this program, ($21,000 total) and I also paid my deposit to attend ($750 + $250 for dorming)

LECOM-Florida

My interview here was just like LECOM-Penn. It started out with a welcome and some information about the school, then we went on to the interviews. It was one on one and it was a blind interview, where she didn't know anything about me. The questions that were asked:

1. Tell me about yourself
2. Why Pharmacy?
3. Why LECOM-Florida?
4. Senario 1 and how to solve it
5. Senario 2 and how to solve it
6. Senario 3 and how to solve it
7. Tell me about a time you worked in a group and how did it turn out
8. Questions/Comments?

and that was about if for the interview.

After the interview we went back to the room and talked with current students, along with a tour of the campus, very similar to the other campus, then we went back to our room for a talk about financial aid, and that was about it. It was short and sweet and everyone was very friendly. The area is beautiful and theres a lot to do around the school.

My interview was on a Thursday and by the next Monday I was accepted. I also paid my deposit there ($500)

LECOM-Penn

Still on the alternate list, but my status on the portal has changed from "Alternate List" to "Under Review"

So theres my update on the schools I have went to. Yes I did pay both deposits but that was because I still wasn't sure which school I wanted to attend, I was hopping back and forth between the two schools and I only had 1 week to pay both deposits. As of right now I am planning on going to MCPHS-W.

I will be keeping this updated, possible 1 more update after this one with my final choice. If I get enough requests I may keep this update with paperwork and what I went through up until the first day of classes.

So that was my past few months experience with applying. From day 1 till now thats where I stand. In other words even if you apply really late, with not such great numbers, it can be done!

Any questions feel free to ask them here or shoot me a private message.

Be back soon with my final decision!

I highly recommend that you pick the cheapest school. You won't regret it; financial freedom is a beautiful thing. With that said, you should stay away from the California schools if you can help it.

Do you have any idea what sort of fields you'll want to get into post-Pharm.D.?

Yes I did look into that.
MCPHS Worcester is $47,450 per year for 3 years, with a total $142,350, and after my scholarship its $121,350 total. (Out of State)
LECOM Florida is $25,030 per year for 4 years, with a total of $100,120 total. (Out of State)

The main thing that turned me away from California was that Northstate was about $70,000 a year for 4 years and Chapman was about $65,000 a year for 3 years...and that was just too much.

But for the 2 schools that I did get accepted to I'm going back and forth, I kind of want to do a three year program because that will save on a whole year of living expense. Even though I don't think it will equal to $21,000 to make the difference, but also I am planning on doing residency. So finishing early may be an advantage for me.

So there is a difference between the two schools with regard to tuition but I am not sure if its enough to be the deal breaker.

Thanks for your input though. 🙂

Oh. In that case, MCPHS looks like the way to go. 🙂

Since MCPHS has a rolling admission, how did you get accepted so late? You would think all the spots would be taken up? I ask because I have very similar stats like you (2.9 GPA, a lot of volunteering and job history) and plan on applying, but am wondering if it matters if I apply in July or later.

Does MCPHS still have an insanely high graduation rate for its pharmacy program?

To be completely honest with you, I questioned that myself as well. Applying so late with not very high stats was a chance I decided to take, and I ended up with interviews. But I prepared a lot for those interviews to the point where I had each school researched. The interview may be easy, but you must be able to carry yourself in front of other students and the interviewer in a way to show your compassion for pharmacy. That will set you apart from other students and in the end the school will want you at their campus. I think, and this is only my assumption, that they don't fill up all the spots right away. Also some people withdraw along the way through the cycle as they decide on other schools so spots will continue to open up to probably the first day of classes.
As far as applying, my suggestion is to apply early. The earlier the better and you will have a much higher chance at getting in. If you are ready to apply then don't think twice and don't wait. But even if you apply late like I did (my finished Phramcas app was done a day before the deadline) you can still get accepted as I was.
With regards to the graduation rate, they do have a higher than average graduation rate compared to other schools. But that is because they take in account all of their campuses.

Just to be clear non of what I stated may be 100% correct, these are all just what I think based on my personal opinions from my experience through this process. i don't want you to think that this is all true facts.

I hope I answered your question and if I did or you have anymore questions please feel free to ask!

Thanks for the help. They start looking at applications on September 1st but they start accepting them in July, do you think any time before September is fine or does it give me a huge advantage being one of the first to apply?

My more important question is, for the interview, you said it was really casual, but was it one-on-one interview or were there other students with you?

Yes, I do believe, as with anything else, to be one of the first to apply. I mean if you have everything that required done, then go for and don't wait.
As far as the interview goes, Im not sure which one you were talking about. I guess I should be more clear about that. The interviews, and I am speaking about all three of them, were not stressful. I was able to converse with the interviewers about random things aside from school. For example in my LECOM - Penn interview I remember answering the question tell me something interesting about yourself. After answering saying that I like working with my hands on cars, he asked me if I would check out his car in the parking lot cause it leaking oil, and I told him if you stick around after this interview I'll take a look at it, but you have to hold my suit. Everyone at the group interview got a kick out of it. At MCPHS, we spent about a half hour just talking about her kids, and where she lived before she moved to Boston, and what her and her husband do for a living aside from teaching. And in LECOM - Florida she turned out to be an AIDS researcher and I coordinated a campus wide Aids Awareness at my University, so we went on and on about Aids and different treatments etc etc.
I guess what I was trying to say is that I didn't feel pressured in any way, and I didn't feel like they were intimidating. I can't speak for other schools though and I was very prepared for the interviews. So maybe the word casual is a bit extreme, but in reality they are not something to get worked up about.
What I really believe the interview is for is for the school to see your personality. How you talk and communicate with people. You were granted an interview because you looked good on paper. Anyone can look good on paper, but you need to be able to compose yourself and speak in an effective manner, after all a lot of retail pharmacy is dealing with people.
If I can give one tip for the interview, it would be to be yourself. Relax and just talk. If you get stuck on a question take a second, repeat the question back to them and answer their question.

To answer your question about if was a group or one on one interview, it depends on the school. LECOM - Penn was group, MCPHS was one on one, and LECOM - Florida was one on one. I personally liked the one on one because you don't have the need to think about what someone else is saying. Theres a feeling of competition in the room and that can throw someone off. But a positive is being able to build on what someone else said. I remember saying "To build on what my colleague so-and-so said, I believe..." Theres good and bad to each but thats up to the school.

Hope that helps and its clear.
Keep the questions coming and I'll get to them as soon as I can!

Thanks for the great reply. 🙂 How long after applying did you hear back from MCPHS? And did you drive to MA or take a plane?

I assume you are doing the 34 month program, are you at all worried about the work load?

Yeah glad I can help!

My interview was Friday April 3, and I received my acceptance letter by mail on April 17, so it was a two week turn around. But I was accepted earlier as the letter was dated April 13.

I took a plane. I live in Michigan and the drive was about 12 hours. I left Michigan Thursday evening, got to Boston at midnight, rented a car and drove about an hour to my hotel in Worcester, then my interview was from 9:30am till about 11:25am, grabbed a bite to eat after, and drove back to Boston to return the car and catch my flight back to Michigan at 2pm. I wasn't even gone for 24 hours haha. If you're wondering the cost of the trip, I had 1 week to book a flight so it was really expensive, $550, plus the car rental, $88 (because I'm under 25y/o so i had to get a bunch of bs insurance), I picked the hotel that was across the street from the school, $142 for a night, and tolls and parking were about $25 total. So it wasn't a cheap trip but it was well worth it, you can't put a price on the experience and that acceptance letter!

Yes I am doing the accelerated program, and as far as the work load I'm not too concerned. I was full time student year round at the University of Michigan and part time as well as a few semesters full time working and volunteering. So I learned to balance my time really well by the end of my college career and I have developed good study habits (I have actually increased my GPA to over a 3.0 since the start of this thread). Since I won't be working nor volunteering in Pharmacy school and I am dorming alone, I don't think I will have any major issues. But this is graduate level classes and I am taking a heavy work load but my past experiences have prepared well enough to be able to handle it.

I'm also in Michigan. That does sound expensive! How much are living expenses compared to other universities? I assume dorming alone costs more, and did you choose the dorm right away, or was it given to you?

Also are there a lot of things to do in Worchester? If I do end up going to MCPHS, it'll be a little daunting having to leave home for 2 years without a single break or visit home. The last 10 months are spent doing rotations (interning) correct?

Oh, and do you know how many classes you take during a semester and how many classes per day?

Hi Gameplayer11 can you tell me which school you finally settled for and everything is join so far? I am trying to apply to one of the pharm schools that do not require pcat. i believe ur inputs can help me decide which school to apple.

I will be happy to help you. I will start off by saying if you can take the PCAT, go for it. I only say that because that will open you possibility to many more schools, as school who don't require the PCAT often have more applicants, again because you don't require the PCAT. But if you choose not to take it thats also not a problem.

I decided on MCPHS, and I accepted the scholarship. So far, coming at the end of my first semesters with finals starting Monday, its been hectic hahaha. This is an accelerated program so its much more demanding. This semester we had close to 24 exams in 14 weeks, and exams don't start until after the 3rd week. I spend about 80% of my time studying. But I can tell you that this is very doable. You just have to make the commitment and focus. From what I've heard from past students and teachers, the first semester is the hardest in the program, mainly because most students are still adjusting to the new atmosphere and the pace of the program.

I have an interview on 3/24 with LecomB, I was wondering if you remember anything about the written assessment. I am not a strong writer and need all the advice possible.
Thanks!!
