Even though I was set on doing IM, I just recently started thinking about radiology. If there are people who are on a limbo like I am (can't decide b/n two specialties), can you tell me how you're going about the residency application process?

I wish you the best of luck. Just remember if you can't convince yourself of radiology, I don't know how you will convince people during the interview. More than any other field, a commitment to radiology is mandatory because of the insane number of books you have to read during residency. As the doctor's doctor you have to have a knowledge base in EVERY specialty. Check out the radiology forum.

With all that said, if you have a genuine interest in radiology. Just apply radiology and drop IM categorical. Even if you change your mind later. You still have to do a PGY1 year (you can pick medicine) so it will keep your options open.

My recommendation is apply broadly in radiology. The average applicant has a 234 Step 1 sends out 42 applications. If you are in the 220's you will probably want to send more out. Studies have shown that people with 13-15 radiology interviews MATCH. Even with a 250+ Step 1 if you have less than 10 interviews you are pushing your luck. The goal is to send out as many applications to get 13 interviews.
