Just wondering if anyone has had any experience with this:

If you are married to someone in the active duty military (Air Force, in this case), can you get IS tuition from any school? Your 'home state' is wherever the military sees fit for you to be, and relocation can sometimes happen randomly.

So, if you moved to a state with a vet school, would you still have to establish residency over a 1 year period (or however the state does residency), or are considerations different because you cannot help where the military moves you?

Are you just out of luck? If you have just been reassigned/relocated are your choices either wait a year to apply or pay OOS tuition?

Most states have this specifically written in their "residency for tuition purposes" regulations. All of the ones I've seen say something to the affect of "if stationed at xxx or xxx or xxx, person, spouse and dependents automatically qualify for instate tuition immediately, regardless of permanent residency."

But, no, you cannot ge "IS tuition from any school" just because he's military. You would have to apply as oos to all the schools that are not your permanent state of residence or where your husband is not currently listed as active.

Edit to add: it appears you are going to LSU in the fall. Congrats! You hubby would need to stationed in LA for you to qualify. From there you need to look at the specifics for LA, then check to see if the SVM has over-rides or additional requirements to the state wide ones.

Good luck!

I'm not entirely sure that's true. I remember reading at a few schools I applied to (I applied to LSU, but not sure if it was one of them) that military means IS everywhere. I would call and ask to know for sure. On my FL residency form, I believe there was an option to choose "Miltary Dependent" as a qualifying factor for IS tuition. It didn't mention anything about having to be stationed in FL. Just my two cents, but I would just call and find out. Good :luck:!

Thanks for the help. It's actually for a friend of mine who said she was planning on applying next cycle...and I didn't know if she had to wait yet ANOTHER year after moving in order to apply. I was getting worried for her.

Also that was, "Are there ANY schools who will give you IS tuition in this situation?" as opposed to, "Can I just apply to all as IS?" 🙂 I realize that was vague...apologies!!

Thanks, Emiloo! 🙂 I'll make sure and let her know to check all that out. You guys are such a wealth of information!!

Also, congrats on UF! I know you were getting antsy for a little bit, there. 🙂 I have a coworker (who also got accepted to LSU in my class) who applied to UF, too. She was quite disappointed when she got the "thanks but no thanks" letter from them.

Ugh, those letters are the worst. At least she didn't apply to Penn where they said "the Committee was unable to act favorably on your application"...😕 We all got a kick out of that phrasing. I applied to LSU as well and am currently waitlisted so I'm hoping to hear some good news soon. Although I'm pretty sure I'll end up at UF. And thanks! 🙂 Congrats to you too! 👍 Best of :luck: to your friend!

That's the pits! Terrible wording!

That's good to know too. The four schools I was perusing all required being active in that state, but that it was effective immediately (for applying or during school).

We'll need to make a list of the schools that view military dependents as automatic IS. I can see a new trend of encouraging one's husband or wife into service for a perk like this!

I do think all vet schools SHOULD give IS tuition (but probably not IS application status) for the service that is being provided for our country! Particularly if they are or have been deployed overseas!

Like I said, don't hold me to it, I'm not positive.
The SO and I actually talked about getting married (we've been together 4 years and he is in the Navy) so that I could get IS anywhere lol, but we never researched it fully since I got into my IS.
