Hi,

Can you get admitted without all pre-reqs completed or do you get a conditional acceptance until you finish them?

You can be admitted. It depends on how many are missing though. Most schools will say less than 5 can be outstanding (because that's what you'd theoretically be able to finish in a semester). Most students applying do not have that many unfinished pre-req's. I applied and was admitted last semester when I was still taking (and therefore did not have the grades for) biochemistry, microbiology, and physics 2 lab. I also hadn't taken and wasn't currently enrolled in micro lab, which lots of schools require. My top choice didn't require it, so I didn't want to take it until I knew where I was going. I got in there, so I won't be taking it 🙂 But the other schools just said "Here's a list of what you need to finish. Sign this statement that says you can't be in the program if you don't finish all of these by the time classes start in August".

Yea, you can definitely be admitted. I applied early fall 2011 and I still had 12 outstanding prerequisites. That's pretty much 5 sciences each semester and 2 in the summer before I matriculate into OD school. I don't recommend doing it that way, but it's certainly possible if you don't want to wait a year. I was accepted to all of my top schools, but conditionally (I have to finish my classes, of course). Also, my gpa was good - if you apply as unfinished as I did, you're asking the school to bet quite a bit on you. You'd better have a good history, ya know. The most important thing to consider is whether or not you're ready to start OD school - apply when you're ready.

Hi! Thanks for the reply. I will have biochem, microbio, and calc left! But I'll be taking those during the fall after I apply so I won't have too many left. When you mean conditional, you just have to PASS (C or above) your classes, right?!

I was admitted without all of mine complete. I was granted a conditional acceptance.. As long as I completed them with a C- or higher, there wouldn't be any problems. Getting above a C- shouldn't be an issue. I believe this is pretty standard for all of the optometry schools, but this experience was at Ohio State. They'll tell you what is required for acceptance at your interview.
