Applying without all the Pre-Reqs completed

Guys Im going to have all the pre-reqs done except

-Stats
-Psych
-Micro Biol
-Bio Chem

I was hoping to apply on July 15 2010. I was thinking Id take Micro and Bio Chem in this fall semester and send the updated transcript to optomcas and the schools I applied to.

Do you think that would be a good idea?

Will this be you're 4th+ year? If so then yeah it should be fine. Just make sure you get A's! Optometry schools expect that some applicants will still be in school when they apply, there is an academic update window in Januaryish where you can enter your fall grades.

Definitely! I think all those four classes are doable within a year (summer, fall, spring). Like Mew said, be sure to do well and update your grades on OptomCAS after the fall!

Depending on what schools your applying to, im not sure if microbio and biochem is a pre-req for all schools, is it? (i dont think it is for SUNY)

you don't have to have all your pre-reqs done whe you apply. You need to have them completed by the time you start classes. I'm taking calculus this summer. It ends august 6th and I start school the 16th.

PCO told me specifically that the reason I didn't get accepted was because I had to many pre-reqs that were not completed. I applied during my 3rd year (I still had Biochem/Micro/Calculus) to finish. They told me that it was b/c they wanted to see the upper-level classes complete. Take it for what it's worth. BTW, SCO told me the same thing.

I think it makes sense a college would hold off on accepting you if too many of your pre-requisites will remain incomplete by the time they'd have to make the decision. With one or two courses remaining, it isn't a bad investment, but if an applicant has four classes to go, it must be too much of a gamble to offer her a seat, as there's little reason to be confident she'll do well in those courses.

Hmm, this news troubles me in a way lol. Since SUNY was the only school i was planning to apply to i was following their website and requirements. I did not plan biochem or micro into my schedule. I am going to be taking upper level science courses...all of which are centered around physics and bio physics...any chance schools will make substitutions if you contact them?

meaning substituting biochem and micro with courses like statistical thermo or 300 level biophysics courses?

Sometimes biochem and micro are *required* and sometimes it's *recommended*. You'll have to take a look at the other schools to find out which are which. Of course you should call the schools about substituting class. I'm not sure if they will let you because they want you to know biochemistry. So if you take a class in biophysics, I'm not sure if it would qualify...ie. You can't sub an upper div genetics class for a biochem class. You know what I mean?
