Dear colleagues,

Several changes to the current structure of the USMLE exams have been tentatively proposed. The goal of these changes is to improve medical education, increasing the integration of basic and clinical science education, by combining USMLE Step 1 and USMLE Step 2 into a single exam. The application and use of exam scores versus the use of a pass/fail scoring system in assessing student performance is also being studied. These proposed changes are a result of a periodic review of the examinations and NOT due to any specific concerns. Please see summary at http://survey.physicianscientists.org/ for further information.

An 18 question multiple-choice survey has been developed by the student leadership of the American Physician Scientists Association (APSA) to generate as much student input as possible regarding attitudes and perceptions of the tentatively proposed changes. We are surveying medical students, residents and fellows who have or will take the USMLE exams.

The survey should take you approximately 10 minutes to complete. Please proceed to http://survey.physicianscientists.org for a more complete explanation and a link to the survey.

Sincerely,
Eric Schauberger,
Chair, APSA Policy Committee
