So I'm having a dilemma. I have been planning on majoring in Biochem and Spanish, and I will definitely be studying abroad in Spain. However, the Biochem major at my school is intense (it probably is everywhere), and I don't know if I can pull off a semester abroad and an extra major if I do Biochem. Is it worth it to try and do the major in Spanish? Is it more impressive to medical schools if you have 2 majors?

2 majors will not be more impressive. Being proficient in Spanish, however, will. At least to many. If you really want to do Spanish, I would actually recommend majoring in that rather than biochem, and just taking as much biochem-related stuff as you can with your free credits.

I agree with this. Major in what will make you most happy. As a double major, I know it's stressful, and not really worth it unless you really can't decide between the two. You could get a minor in whichever one you don't pick.

Those are both really good points. I do really enjoy Spanish, and I do like Biochem, it just seems like everyone I know keeps pushing the science majors by saying that if medical school doesn't happen I could do graduate work. Right now it seems like I'm on the right track for medical school, I just don't want to end up not getting in to medical school and then not having a major I can use... I don't know, this is stressful😳

If I were you, I would pick the Spanish major - you're only in college once, and going to Spain for a semester is probably something you'll never have an opportunity to do again... With that said I understand your concern about having an employable degree when you graduate - I did the same thing and double majored in chemistry and dance. If you take summer classes, could you do both majors? But do well in your prereqs, have a good MCAT, and get lots of clinical experience and you should be a good candidate for medical school no matter what your major is.

It's definitely do-able. For example, I have a friend who double-majors in chemistry and materials engineering, plus has 3 foreign language minors, and has studied abroad in China for one semester. And he has still maintatined a very high GPA through all of this.

The catch is that he's doing a 5-year program so he has more time to plan out his curriculum than others. So in the end, it may depend on how much time you're willing to invest. If you feel that it would be worth it to put off applying to medical school for a year to get an extra major that you are really interested in, then go for it.

Also, I should mention that my friend is not a pre-med.

i did two majors but a lot of my stuff overlaped. i once ask an admissions person and they told me they dont really care if u have 2 or 1 major as long as u finish ur degree. I would say taking the spanish would be better, just make sure u take a good number of upper division bio classes to make ur app a little bit stronger.

Who is pushing this idea? Your parents? Friends? College advisors?

Major in Spanish. It will all work out.
