Hi 🙂 I'm entering MS1 in August so I'm a long way from my residency yet, but EM is definitely an area that I'm leaning towards at this point. I'm a Canadian, and the EM residency at UBC is 5 years. Can any Canadians out there tell me if this is pretty standard across the country? Also, are all American residencies 3 or 4 years, or are some 5 years as well? This is all totally out of curiousity, as I am clearly still at the bottom rung of the med ladder (not EVEN at the bottom rung yet! 😉 ) and know nothing! 😀
Thanks 🙂

All 3 or 4 years. There are combined EM/IM and EM/peds that are 5 years.

Check out the FAQ regarding pros/cons 3 vs 4.

A five year Canadian residency is three years American, with the conversion I mean.

I looked through the FAQs for 3v4 advice and couldnt find any... Either I am 1. correct, there is none; 2. completely blind; 3. a raging *****; or 4. a combination of 2 and 3.

Serious question though, are Canadian (and European) residencies longer because they don't work as many hours per week as we do?

They don't work as hard as we do.

I followed a Swedish surgical resident for a week. They had coffee breaks, just as does every other Swedish occupation. They were in later, out earlier, and much much much much much much much more relaxed.

But those Swedish taxes (80% of income) are killer. I'll give up my coffee break if it means I get to take home a lot more money.

Also to answer this Q.. there is the EM/IM/Critical Care which is 7 yrs..

Historically, did any other medical specialties have residencies of two different lengths? Will EM training contiue to be 2 different lengths (and 3 different formats) or will all EM residencies eventually the same length.
