Are D.Os allowed to prematch? like sign the contract and not participate in the match. Or is it like that D.Os can sign the contract but still go through the match and both sides verbally agree to rank each other number one.
Please help.

Currently all Independent Candidates, which inludes DOs, are allowed to sign contracts outside of the match. I'm not sure why you would sign a contract before the NRMP and then still participate in the match as I'm pretty sure most programs would require you to drop out of the match if you signed pre-match.

I thought Starting this year, D.Os are not to prematch anymore. However, people still sign contracts and participates in the match. You and the program just verbally agree to rank each other #1 so you end up matching. This won't violate the prematch deal which require you to drop out of the match. When you drop out, the NRMP gets kinda suspicious.

Not sure if the above is true or not. can someone make this issue clear. Where can I find the guidelines , exact rules of the match, etc... It seems like the guideline is realy vague and hard to interpret.

There was a lot of talk about eliminating the pre-match process this year, but as far as I can tell, it has not been implemented. The NRMP web site still classifies DOs as Independent Candidates and I cannot find any restrictions on pre-matches for this group. The following is from their section on FAQs:

I've signed a contract outside the Match. What happens now?

Under the terms of the Match Participation Agreement, an independent applicant who accepts a position outside the Match must withdraw immediately. Failure to do so is a material violation of the Agreement and will be investigated by the NRMP in accordance with the Policies and Procedures for the Reporting, Investigation, and Disposition of Violations of NRMP Agreements. Penalties may be levied if a violation is confirmed. No applicant can withdraw from the Match after the rank order list deadline.

This seems to allow pre-matches at this time.
