Hi everyone
Im working on gettting my letter of rec right from my science professor now. Im pretty sure i wont get decent letter from my bio and chem profs
I' m pretty close to two professors from math and psych department. I TA for that psych prof too. Do dental school accept letter of rec from math and psych as science prof letter of rec. Are they going to meet the 2 science prof letter of rec requirement? Some of you guys already know that I got some weak letter from science prof. I really dont want to send them in.
if you get interview with this kind of letter please let me know
Any info would help
THanks

Ali,

Although math and psychology courses are calculated into the Science GPAs for dental school applications by AADSAS, unfortunately, according to my experiences that those respective professors are not considered to be your norm "science" professors for dental school letters of recommendation. Your best bet, call the dental schools of interest and bluntly ask them if they consider that a math or a psychology professor a "science" professor.

But on a positive note, you can always use those professors for the third letter of recommendation(since most dental schools will require three letters and with at least two from "science" professors), if you know that they will write you a POSITIVE letter.

Ali, It is MORE imporant to get a letter of rec from someone who will strongly support your application than a one para 'he took my course and scored blah blah' kind. And you should absolutely get your psych professor to write you a strong letter. You might want to ask him to especially comment on your academic aptitude and your ability to engage scholastically with peers (from your TA experience?). Also math is acceptable in my view as long as you have one science. I think analytical ability is always useful in dentistry... the last I checked Math was still a part of the DAT's!
And your science profs should tell you upfront about the quality of their recs. Just go and ask them.
Also I have heard that some schools will also look favorably if you have ok rec from profs but a really good letter from a dentist where you have observed/worked.
Hope this helps. Best wishes on your endeavors.

Thanks for the reply
im reallly appreciate it
One more question for YAh -zzz
is that true they count psych grade as science gpa? If you were right, my science gpa is going to go up another.1 point.

Ali:

That would help my science GPA also but I don't think that psych courses count in the science GPA.
Take a look at the 2002 instruction book for AADSAS by visiting www.adea.org. The instructions have a list of courses for GPA reporting. The courses included in the science GPA have a special symbol next to them. 😱

Ali,

My bad! I double checked and Psychology courses ARE NOT included in the AADSAS science GPA calculation! Sorry for the misleading comment.
