I am in my sophomore year and I quite nervous that the recession on my lower teeth will get me rejected from dental school. If I score high on the DAT and have a high science GPA will this help me during the interviews?I know some students receive braces during dental school, will I be able to receive a gum graft? Although I am about two years away from interview I am incredibly self-conscious about my recession. I appreciate any assistance received and thank you again.

This is a very interesting post! I would be inclined to say that it won't matter as much as you're thinking. Most dentists I've encountered don't have perfect teeth or anything even close. However my teeth aren't great either(Family has crappy genetics) and I've been wondering if that could ever play a role in admissions. Still, I'm inclined to say no.

Even with a 4.0 GPA and a 25+ on the DAT you'll never get in as you'll never pass the TAT (Tooth Admissions Test). So just abandon ship now.

Seriously, though, I very highly doubt ADCOMS care about your teeth. They care about what you'll do for others' teeth.

At the very least they would recognize you will far better empathize with patients who are in a similar situation as you. Which is a huge population with poor dental hygiene. I would say it's a pro and you can get treatment in dental school at a reduced cost as well.

It has zero influence in Dental School or how you want to practice UNLESS you plan on opening Beverly Hills to give smiles to the stars.

Ew why would anyone go to you?

Jk, I'm sure you could get a discount on any procedure in dental school.

Good luck!

Don't worry about your teeth, worry about your spelling. #acceptable

Honestly I worry somewhat about this too. I have some fairly moderate gum recession due to a combo of stress and vigorous bushing. My teeth are pretty straight though and I've always received compliments from dentists so it can't hurt me too much.

Wait really? My dentist told me I should consider getting those clear plastic braces (invisalign?) to fix my cross bite. I never had braces before but I am thinking about getting those, it's just that they would cost a good amount of money, from what she explained. So I could get that done for cheap in dental school? How does that even work?

That's like saying a person won't get into med school because they have diabetes

Having an imperfect smile won't keep you from getting into dental school, but patients might care since that's the first thing they'll see.

Adcoms may not care about how an applicant's teeth look like, but you can bet patients are sure to notice. Kind of like getting medical fitness/weight /diet advice from a physician that looks like a protagonist from an episode of My 600 Pound Life.
