Are summer internship and research programs helpful?

Hi Im a sophomore and premed (like half the kids at my school). I want to go to medical school and I already started studying for mcat. The question I have is how helpful is summer internship programs in your application? I already do research and my gps is fine.

Are they vital? Should I use that summer time to study for the MCAT more instead?
