Are there official residency rankings anywhere?

Helping a professor do some research about our school's match, but not able to find anything in terms of residency rankings. Is there any publication that ranks them each year?

Thanks!
Closest you'll get is Doximity, but it's super +/-.

There's no objective way to rank residencies, except for just big buckets like academic vs semi-academic vs community - and even then it's often hard to tell. There's even fields (looking at you EM) where the "best" programs by reputation are random community programs god knows where.

Cincinnati Denver Charlotte Los Angeles.

Im not sure of any big name EM program that is in a "no name" location

No name location correct, but like Cook County EM is considered to be better training than Northwestern EM. I imagine in most specialties it's the other way around and certainly for the uninformed Northwestern EM probably "looks better" than Cook County.

The closest you'll get is doximity, but essentially after the top few programs, the next 30 or so are roughly interchangeable with each other, and each field has one or two programs way up there that do NOT belong.

Doximity is basically a giant popularity contest. It's all about name recognition and has nothing to do with the quality of the residency program. You're better off talking to a mentor in your field of interest to get the low down on which programs train good residents, and which to avoid like the plague.

Shouldn't your professor know that there aren't "official" residency rankings?

There’s also US News and World report rankings, but they don’t look at the residencies/fellowships, just the department/division within the hospital, so doesn’t help a ton. I found it helpful as a starting place for Peds since the Peds programs aren’t the same caliber as the IM programs. But training at a big name doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll get good training.

I mean you could argue that Cincinnati and Charlotte are pretty no-name cities lol

Come on down to one of them no-name cities for residency! The cows don't bite and we'll show you how corn is made!

Oh and we actually have some really prestigious programs, and the difference in cost of living can be literally thousands of dollars a month. Yee haw!

Hennepin Health is the classic “Where?” For EM. Top 10 on Doximity, Step1 average >240 by Texas star, and it’s literally a community hospital in Minneapolis Minnesota.

There’s also UCSF-Fresno and Maricopa County in pheonix - EM powerhouses that are in places/hospitals no one outside EM has ever heard of.

Minneapolis is home to a NFL NBA and a MLB team

Back to the question at hand though - you can use the Texas Star database and sort by average Step 1 to get a rough idea for how competitive places are.

Avg step can give you an idea of how selective places can be. It won’t show you the BEST residency though. The best residency is the one youre happiest at.

Yea but the HOSPITAL is an otherwise no name hospital. Just like Maricopa is a no name in Phoenix, or Highland Health is a no name in Oakland.

Fresno on the other hand is quite literally the middle of nowhere.

Yeah but still in California. You could put a residency in Compton and people would be lining up.

IMO Compton>>>>>Fresno. People would actually line up. You could live in West LA, Santa Monica, or any number of very nice places nearby. You can’t escape the heat and dust in Fresno.

I’ve never understood the fascination of wanting to live in places like California and New York. High cost of living + congested commuting = no go for me.

Not only that, but you don’t really have the time or money to enjoy the “benefits” of a big city during residency
