Are there PreMed programs that GUARANTEE entry into Medicine, such that when you finish the PreMedical uear you AUTOMATICALLY enter the MD program?

Thanks.

There are several BS/MD programs out there, but even those require a certain GPA and/or MCAT score to stay in the program. A few schools have an early assurance program, where you can apply after you finish your prereqs and take the MCAT, but you're still applying to get into the program at one point in time or another.

Beyond that, there are no guarantees.

theres no such thing as a "guarantee" for med school.. the only somewhat guarantee is an BS/MD program, but they usually require high SAT scores (because no MCAT) and high GPA...

other than that, i heard from an adviser that physical science majors are usually more competitive than other majors, but still no guarantee.

I believe Dartmouth College, Baylor University, and Georgetown University have those kinds of program. I believe you need to have a minimum ACT score of 31 and high school GPA of 4.0 at least weighted.

Questionable advice. This hasn't been true in my experience or in the stats that I have looked at. I would be interested to see what data the advisor made this claims from.

I've never heard anything like this. I would not take it at face value.

Vanderbilt has a program like that for Vanderbilt undergrads. They don't have to take the MCAT and all they have to do is meet a certain GPA cut-off once they get into the program

Dartmouth does not have a BS/MD program of any kind, but I think the medical school is affiliated with the Sophie Davis program. Baylor does have a BS/MD program with BCM although the Rice/BCM is more popular. Georgetown has an early assurance program for Georgetown undergraduates. I've never heard of any BS/MD programs with the high school requirements like you mentioned, but they are usually so competitive people who get in have stats higher than that.

Texas A&M has one for people who are interested in Rural Medicine/Primary Care.

Rice University and Baylor College of Medicine offer a Bacc/MD program; only fourteen very competive slots available per year.

8. What is the acceptance rate into the Rice/Baylor program?

Last year, more than 1,000 Rice applicants expressed an interest in the Rice/Baylor Medical Scholars Program; 305 applicants were admitted and given the opportunity to compete for admission to the Medical Scholars Program. Fifty-one of those students were selected as finalists and asked to interview with Baylor College of Medicine. After the interviews, 14 students were selected as Rice/Baylor Scholars.

If you live in Texas there's the JAMP program. It's for people who are economically disadvantaged, and I'm not sure how competitive it is. To stay in the program you have have to keep a 3.2GPA and make a 23 on the MCAT.

Yeah, there's a ton of programs like that called BS/MDs which you apply to when you're in High School. Some schools have programs like that which you apply to once you are already an undergrad. Some require you to take the MCAT and some don't, but all are pretty competitive.

Yes, lots of schools have them. You normally have to maintain a certain GPA as an undergrad. There is one at Brown (PLME), and many, many other institutions have similar programs. There are also post-bac programs that have linkage programs that guarantee acceptance (if you have certain stats); Goucher and Bryn Mawr come to mind.

Albany Medical School has such a program, with 3 colleges in the area, Sienna, RPI and Union College. You have to be accepted into the program from HS and maintain a minimum GPA each semester or risk be expelled from the program. If you meet the requirements, you are guaranteed a space at Albany Medical School. I know such a person in the program. You do not have to take the MCAT's if you matriculate into Albany.

Do you mean just automatic admission programs? or (like JAMP) admission programs for students who come from a poor socioeconomic background?

Aside from direct Highschool-to-short-undergrad-to-med school programs, I know there's one at VCU, if you go into their honors school and maintain a certain GPA, they'll give admission to their med school.

But you have to apply to their honors school, then apply to the guaranteed program through the honors school.

Pitt has a guaranteed admission program, but the spots are very limited. To qualify, you need to have the highest GPA attainable at your high school along with a high SAT/ACT score. They have to keep a 3.75 GPA, and they have to do community service/volunteering/research, but no MCAT!

HPME at Northwestern is pretty slick.

University of Rochester has the REMS program "Rochester Early Medical Scholar."

If you're in a NY high school, and you know for sure you want to go into medicine, this is the best deal out there. BS/MD route
5 years of undergrad at city college tuition (practically free), STEP1, then straight into 2 years of rotations at one of these schools:

  • Albany Medical College
  • Dartmouth Medical School
  • New York Medical College
  • New York University School of Medicine
  • The State University of New York (SUNY) Health Science Center at Brooklyn
  • SUNY at Stony Brook School of Medicine

note: extremely competitive and extremely sweet

All these programs seem to be extremely competitive. Are there any BS/MD programs where a person with reasonable stats stands a chance of getting in?

Define "reasonable". I'm in my last year at a BS/MD program. I can't really think of anyone who got an interview with below a 32 on their ACT. They all had pretty solid GPAs.

Loads of friends from my high school with nearly identical stats didn't get an interview, so personal statements are vital, even on top of stellar stats. I had a 34 ACT, 2250 SAT, 4.52/3.88 (unweighted) GPA, and I only got an interview at one program out of like 10.

traditional BS/MD programs are what I would call, extremely competitive. JAMP is an exception, although it's getting more and more competitive each year.Still, I got in, so it can't be that bad. It's tough to meet all the requirements for JAMP besides good HS/College GPA (SATs don't weigh much with them--apparently).

If you have a pulse, you're overqualified to become a naturopathic doctor.

are you really surprised that these programs are so competitive? it's essentially taking an "easy route" to medical school -- of course they're only looking for the top, the best, the brightest. if you really want to try, you can just apply but if you don't get in, go the way the rest of us do.
