My parents just told me that they spoke to someone whose son is getting paid $5000 to shadow surgeons in Texas. I haven't found anything on Google, but that sounds quite interesting.

Yeah I've never heard of anything like that. Usually it's a bit of a task to convince physicians to let you shadow them in the first place...

I love these situations, it's usually parents who don't really understand or are leaving out info such as that their son is a personal scrub tech of the surgeon he "shadows." Often I find it is just that they don't understand the details. I heard someone the other day tell me their daughter was in "medical school" to be a CNA.... Bless the hearts of parents everywhere.

The MD Anderson summer Externship provides a stipend to its students and it is basically a shadowing and clinical exposure program. Based on the brochure I received, it pays 2,500 $. Not bad for just walking around MD Anderson and learning about medicine.

There are programs with stipends that include shadowing (I think NYU has one?), but $5K sounds way too high and the program is probably not only shadowing

One could make the argument that having a dedicated program (like the one at MD Anderson I mentioned) that pays students enough to live while they come and shadow every day would be very helpful for students who 1) have little to no shadowing to begin with and 2) cannot afford to spend a prolonged period of time without earning anything because of circumstances outside of their control.

One of my friends at least still has 0 shadowing coming into their fourth year because they have to work/go to school/do research during the academic year and cannot afford to be without an income during vacation periods. Obviously, there are other ways to gain clinical exposure, many which pay, and they have pursued those instead. But shadowing? Zilch.

But, is shadowing worthy of payment in the traditional sense of being compensated for some sort of effort or work? Hell no, lol.

Being a medical scribe is a job with embedded shadowing. You'll likely get more out of scribing than just shadowing in my experience.

I also did an internship that was mostly shadowing for 15$/hour.
