I will be starting medical school in the fall and i was wandering if any one has had experience with a some books that inform students on how to successfully get into a residency. One book, by Kenneth V. V. Iserson, is entitled Iserson's Getting into a Residency: A Guide for Medical Students. There is also another book called 101 Biggest Mistakes 3rd Year Medical Students Make and how to Avoid Them, by Samir P. Desai. I was just wandering if anyone has used them or heard anything good about them. Thanks!!

Both are really good, but you really won't need 101 Biggest Mistakes until you get closer to third year. Iserson's, OTOH, gives advice for all four years and is somewhat more useful when you're just starting out.

congrats on med school bono. the writer of "101 mistakes" is a regular poster on SDN and has responded to questions about his book on a clinical rotations thread. the link is here: http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=119996

On the other hand, if you are enthusiastic, smart, and respectful of authority you will do well in third year and save yourself the price of these books. I have browsed through some of these books in the bookstore and much of the advice, in a strange way, does not apply at my medical school. At least, third year has been different then I imagined from what I gleaned from those books.
