So i come on here every now and then
get freaked out, stressed out have panic attacks after i read everyones posts. How everybody on here has like a 3.5 and a 23 or something DAT score. ummmmmm call me crazy but i dont think all people who apply to dental school are as competitive as this.
I mean to say, arent there alot of applicants out there (not on sdn) who are applying (& have probably been accepted to dental school before) and have stats way lower than all these posted on this website? ALSO, correct me if im wrong because i dont totally know, but isnt the nations average DAT score a 17 -18?? so.....isnt scoring a 20, ABOVE average?
i just am so confused and coming on sdn just stresses me out because it seems everyone on here is perfect!!!! which drives me crazy yet i keep coming back....its a sick addiction. fml

Yes predents and SDN is inflated but not outrageously. Dude its the decade of "I wanna be a doctor/dentist/vet....." Stats would be lower if it was the 90s the decade of "I wanna be a CEO/Lawyer" or the 80s the decade of "I wanna be in a band and do cocaine!".

haha, you are right. SDN is a small and highly motivated fraction of the applicant pool. I believe the DAT average is around 17-18 and the average for admitted students is 19. I know it is hard but try not to get caught up in all the stats on this site they are nothing like the national average.

I think you are spot on, all people who APPLY to dental school aren't as competitive. But let me assure almost all those IN dental school are this competitive.

I doubt it and here is why.

We have alot of guy here who have DAT of around 18-19 and GPA of 3.2 and 3.3 and I don't think any of them has gotten an interview yet !!!

So if what you are saying is true, then we should have seen some of these guys getting interviews, right !!

this is a gross generalization. check out my predents. I've got an interview at umdnj

Well, you do not fit the category that our friend is talking about here, do you? You have a 3.5sGPA and 4.0 Post-Bac GPA 🙂 . that 4.0 is impressive as hell.

He is talking about people with 3.2, 3.3 and 18-19 DATs.

i think they are yappy, i know that some schools have already given a lot of interview spots (looking at predents). but there are more to come im sure of it. im tired of snd tonight, im going to take a break. maybe...

I have a pretty good GPA - 3.6 cum and sci - but only 18 AA/18 TS and I have 4 interviews so far. I know my GPA is helping, but I also wrote a killer PS, have great ECs, and am a non trad student with accounting work experience....I think all those things help a lot as well. If your DAT isn't stellar don't give up! I'm glad I decided to go with mine and not retake.

yeh don't look at SDN and think thats the norm.... Probably only 5% of the real pre-dent population are SDNers, the other 95% are the "normal" folks.

The average DAT & GPA for those who got accepted last year was 19.2AA and about 3.4-3.5 GPA

I'm just really glad that I didn't hear about this website until after I was in dental school. It would have convinced me that I'd never get in. My GPA was low. My DAT was average. I still had 3 interviews and was accepted on Dec 1. Not to brag, but I'm doing great in school. Don't let this website freak you out and don't let people tell you that a low undergrad GPA means you can't handle the workload in dental school.

SDN doesn't represent any trends whatsoever. It is a very small sample so take it for whatever it is worth. I'm a 1st year student as well and almost half of my class swears that they never even heard of SDN…I don't know about that but you get the idea…. So just relax and remember it is not over until you get all the rejection letter..

A student in my class got accepted on July 21st and our orientation was on August 3rd and it happens all the time so hang in there mate, your interview invites/s will come…. good luck!

words from the wise!!! 😉...goto the NYU thread and set some people str8 plz!!...that thread is becoming a train wreck!!

keep it all in perspective...

ppl who find forums like sdn are already a little bit of a "type", to like sdn you have to enjoy internet forums to some degree, or at least like your job so much you talk about it when you're away from it. and people like to talk about their good side. so high dat ppl do things like sticking it in their signature, maybe makes them feel good, but maybe their gpa is bad. or they're both good so they're super excited and they bubble over talking about it. Best foot forward. And the better they do, the more they like it, the more they want to talk/share about it. My lowest score is Bio, so you won't hear me giving Bio advice other than "good luck" and "it's a tricky devil." But i'll talk all day about RC and chem cuz i like it.

I totally agree with ya. This is my second time applying now. I have a GPA around 3.3 and a 21AA, but i did score a 30 on orgo. So I think I am close to the avg. and I have gotten 3 interviews so far. Its all about going for what you want, if you want to be a dentist, you will make it. It just might take a few times. I also didn't know about this website the previous year but there is no way that the low people are going to post the scores.

I think it depends on how you use this site. It is a great resource that provides you with a lot of good advice from people who have done well on the DAT, school, and in their dental practice. I would not look at all of the high scores and freak out. Instead, find out what all of these people have done and try to do the same or better 🙂. I know for a fact that if I had not visited the dental forums/completed with my fiance's DAT score, I would not have done as well as I did. However, after looking at some peoples' scores on predents and sdn, I kinda feel like my score is just average

What is your PAT and TS ?

Are you Out of State for any of these schools ?

Do you have post Bac degree ?

Let me first say that I hope I am wrong and many of you are correct and a student with a GPA of 3.3-3.4 and DAT of 19-18 can get into dental school as a OOS.

However, Looking at numbers , I just don't see that.

For example, look at the stats dentalWorks has postsed. While looking at these numbers you have to keep couple of things in mind as well:

1) URM student
2) Home State Student

These two catageory will most likely lower the real Average GPA and DAT for accepted students.

I think for an OOS , you have to have Min of 3.5 and 20s to get accepted.

But again, lets hope I am wrong 🙂

the sample is very small to make generalizations...

thanks for sharing, peachy. It's encouraging...like a lot of others who responded to this post...i'm freaaaking out.

I like posts like these--helps keep my head screwed on tight and upright haha👍:xf:

Don't be intimidated my friend!

What do you think is going to occur more frequently?
Some one posting their 3.7 23AA

or

3.0 17AA

I wouldn't post a low score with seeing how others have such high ones. Alot of my friends took the DAT wit an average of about 18-19

My PAT was 18, TS was 20. So I think I definetly fall in to the average but one score really can help you stand out. I am out of state for 2 schools and in state for one. And yess I do have a post bac in biochemistry and molecular biology.

Thank you very much for the information. Your stat is exactly lik mine.
May I ask what is your GPA for your post Bac?

hey bro, for us International students, i think 3.5 and 20s are pre-requisites to geting interviewed sigh...

Well, when it comes to private schools, there is no difference between us and OOS students. I verified thatmyself with USC, BU and Tuft and Western and Midwestern. So If that is pre-req for us, then it is also pre-req for other OOS students.

I hope you are right, we are in the same boat, may our interviews come soon
Good luck
