Hi everyone,

I have a question. Are you considered a competitive applicant just by the fact that you got invited for an interview? What I mean is - exactly how many people do programs interview that they're not really interested in?

Oh, also - what exactly are the "thanks but no thanks" responses from programs like? Do they write/email an actual "we've got your application but we can't....blah blah"

Ok, thats all, thanks for any responses!

i think that if they invite you, they at least think you may be a good fit and are rankable. i can't imagine that they would waste time interviewing somebody that they don't think would be a good fit.

i got my first rejection yesterday (bummer)...it basically said thanks for applying but unfortunately we are unable (unable? or unwilling!!) to offer you an interview. good luck with the match. and this is almost verbatim, it was about 5 lines, very straight to the point. not a good email to get, but i prefer it to hanging on the line, hoping you may get an invite and never hearing anything...

good question i was wondering the same thing. For example if the programs you apply to interview 100 people for 10 positions...and you get let's say 5 total interviews....does this mean that more than likely you will match? Assuming they rank everyone that interviews...

thanks so much for the responses I appreciate them. I hope everyone gets their first choice match, and I'm hoping for more interviews!!!

Good luck everyone 🙂

You said you only invite applicants you are interested in. Does that mean you WILL rank them?? 😕

I doubt interest = definite rank, after all the same goes for the programs applicants interview at. Out of say 12-15 places, chances are one might turn out such a bad fit you'd rather take the risk of scrambling.

Though I'd hope they'd rank the majority...

No program will rank EVERY applicant they interview. There are some interviews that go badly. Programs realize that people wouldn't fit in, or they had a different impression in person than when they read their application.

I would say that 80-90% of interviewees are ranked by most programs.
