Are you really Doctors?

Optometrists are NOT physicians. When I worked for a RGP contact lens lab in Michigan, I read an article about some OD who was ordered by his state to stop using the title 'Dr. So-and-so, Optometric Physician', since ODs are not complete physicians. In the same way, I don't think Chiropractors can call themselves Chiropractic Physicians.

Just wanted to add to the thread. Nurses are now fighting for doctorate of nursing. 😉

I can not believe this thread still lives on. If a troll wants to begin an immortal thread all they have to do is insult the majesty of medicine, and a never ending flame fest fueled by insecure egos is the result. If I was going into psych, this would fascinate me to no end.

I've pulled up a chair and some popcorn and am enjoying the show.

Why is a person who graduates from medical school referred to as "Doctor"?
If the dictionary describes a doctor as a person who is awarded the highest degree in an academic discipline, then one is not really a doctor unless they have a Phd in medicine. Is it not true that an MD is the equivalent of a masters degree?

you're a **** and probably couldn't quite make the cut into med school.

The day I call a nurse "doctor" is the day I quit medicine and swallow a bullet.

They shouldn't - but they do. Here in Nebraska they recently won the right to be called "Chiropractic Physicians" - on their website, they even have a section titled "Will you be our family doctor?" 😱 They can call themselves Dr. X all they want - but using the term physician, and describing themselves as "family doctors" is going to get people hurt or killed.

I don't know any PhD students who started out wanting to go to med school. A bunch of them change their minds after they get halfway through their degree and see how crappy the job prospects are, though.

When I went to grad school I could count the number of PhD students who wanted to go to med school on one finger. Now, for Masters students, I'd need a couple extra hands.

I have a PhD and will have an MD later this month, and don't spend a lot of time thinking about (nor really caring about) what I'm addressed as. What I've found is that the people that give the most thought to this "MD versus PhD thing" are typically medical students or applicants.
