Are you required to sign disclosure forms when you do research at another university?

I've done volunteer research at my own university and the process is just that you email a professor, they ask for a CV, and then call you for an interview.

I want to do volunteer research at different college (due to being away from my university for the summer) but what I want to know is do they require you to sign background check and/or disclosure forms because you are not from that university? Have any of you had experience with volunteer research assistant positions at different colleges? And to be perfectly candid, I have a record. I did petty things that I regret now and it took me several years to get my life back together and go back to college. I am now a nontraditional student. I've applied for lab tech jobs, internships, summer research programs, etc. and they have all rejected me. Many employers/interviewers have told me that I will immediately be rejected because of it and that they will not consider my interview. My only option is to volunteer with a professor as a research assistant for free, but if colleges require background checks from me because I am from another school, I fear that there will be no way I can get research experience. I am not trying to hide anything, it's just that my life several years ago was very different and I have put a lot of work into getting back to college and I would be very sorry to see all my opportunities disappear based on that record.

Sorry if this is very unrelated to the usual questions. I tried the search function and couldn't come up with anything similar.
