Just a question out of curiousity. Does everyone wanting to be a dentist here have a perfect white smile or do some need work before you start your profession?

I actually need some work done, but my dentist told me I should wait until I get to school. He said I can "sell" my mouth to other students in exchange for required procedures that may be hard to come by. 😀

I agree to wait and have some of the more basic, general dentistry stuff performed by other dental students FOR FREE. I'll probably wait next year to have my composite filling done.

But this coming month I'm getting all 4 wisdom teeth extracted....yikes. 😱 Wish me luck!!

PErfect? No. Did I ever ned braces. no. I did have wisdom teeth extracted however.

I was reading an interesting article the other day - think it was Dental Economics but I'm not sure - anyway, it was about how you'd never buy a club membership from a fattie, or nice clothes from a store where the employees all dressed in worn-out jeans and t-shirts so how can you ever expect to sell cosmetic procedures if you and your staff have funky smiles. Whew... long sentence. Basically, if you need work - just get it done before you start to practice.

I did the whole braces thing and had my wisdom teeth extracted, so I'm happy with my smile. But I could also stand to have teeth whitening. Do they do it for free in dental school???🙂

I had all my teeth extracted and replaced with caramel corn. The white tips really standout well against the orange and yellow hues. Everyone knows that patients go to the dentist with the hottest assistants not the best teeth. I plan on having bikini fridays and topless tuesdays.

Actually I'm thinking of getting invisalign braces. My teeth are in great shape though...nice and white. Anyway, has anyone had any experience with invisalign braces???

If you want whiter teeth but do not want to use pastes and gels, I recommend you get a Sonicare. I love mine...feels like I leave the dentist every time I brush my teeth.

I have always been told my whole life that I have a very nice smile. No braces, but had my wisdoms removed. Due to the wisdom's i have two bottom teeth that are slightly off center.

There is an old joke that say's when you move to a town and there are two barbers, which do you choose? The one with the nice hair cut? or the one with the really bad hair cut?
You choose the one with the really bad hair cut b/c he is the guy that is cutting the guy with the nice hair cut's hair.

I hope the adcoms will look favorably on my numerous coffee stains and the massive erosion i've acquired from taking amphetamines while studying for the dat (joke).

Well, if it weren't for my braces i wouldn't be pursuing a career in dentistry

Yeah I agree, but its all about the total package.

Nobody wants to see someone smile who looks like theyve been eating rocks their whole life.

Likewise, good teeth cant do much to save someone who looks like they fell out of the ugly tree and hit every branch on the way down. ON THEIR FACE, HARD.

I'm in agreeance (i've used this word at least 25 times since Fred Durst created it)

I'm beginning to realize that looks really do matter in the office. The girls look they're straight out of Russ Meyers films.

My interviewer at Pitt said that I had a very nice set of choppers 🙂 I'd like them a tisch whiter though.
(*BTW - for those doing the home whitening kit thing, proceed with CAUTION: I tried the Rembrandt one and my lower lip turned bright red and stung and swelled up like a balloon - no joke. Anyone else have this experience? )

Well, I think my teeth are darn near perfect...they should be for the money invested! I've done the whole braces thing, wisdom theeth extractions (all 4), and professional bleaching. I gotta say it was ALL worth it! And like one of the previous posts, i would never have gotten interested in dentistry if not for my braces.😀

Having "good" teeth is DEFINITELY not a prereq to enter dental school! I have some classmates who I am dying to (someday) get my hands on. Or someone else more capable, that's a better idea.

As for me, I've had the works. Braces, 3rds extracted, veneers, bleaching. They always tell us that, by far, the number one reason people choose dental school is b/c they've been influenced by their orthodontist.

I have all my teeth (32 of them). And all my premolars, molars have composite fillings in the pits and fissure areas because of my brushing habit. However, I paid my dentist dearly so she would take good care of them. They look descent. But I need to do ortho once I'm in dental school. I have been hestitated to do the bracing thing because of so much trouble and money.

If any of you do the bleaching thing and your mouth/lips are swollen. That's because the chem. reagents block the serous or mucous glands. Once those glands are blocked, they can't secrete saliva, et.....Just rub on the swollen place gently to try to unblock those little glands. The best way is to just put those whitening reagent on your teeth, not gum, not lips...etc.....

😀 😀 😀 😀

I had braces for 8 years!! (from 8-16) Unfortunately I lost my retainers and I have to get them again. I went to Dr. Celenza's office, a professor at NYU, to see if I'm eligible for invisalign. Unfortunately I wasn't but when I told him that I was planning on going to dental school, he told me that I should get my teeth fixed before I go to school.
So there might be something if a professor says that you should.
