Arizona Programs

I interviewed at both Mayo-Scottsdale and the University of Arizona this past application cycle.

I really liked Mayo-Scottsdale. The hospital and clinic were beautiful, however the hospital only had about 250 beds. The people were all top rate (especially Dr. Dodick). Mayo-Scottsdale is a new program with this year being the first year they accepted neurology residents. I was a little apprehensive about being the first residents in the program, with no senior residents for back up or to lighten the call load. When I interviewed they also didn't have the logistics of the call schedule worked out (I got the impression I would be Q4 for 3 years). Since the hospital is so small I was worried about the volume of patients, however being the Mayo Clinic I think they get a good variety of diseases. All in all I came away liking the facilities (besides being small), the people were all great, and the area (Scottsdale and Phoenix) would be a great place to live. I think in a couple of years if not next year they will have a great residency program if they don't already.

The University of Arizona left me with a mixed impression. I had a bad experience in Tucson unrelated to the U of A and was unable to really concentrate during my interview. I just wanted to get out of Tucson and not return (long weird story). That being said take my assessment accordingly. Tucson was very pretty with the surrounding mountains but small. The people at U of A were all friendly and laid back. The program seemed solid enough for what I was looking for. However I didn't know if I could see myself fitting in there. That was just the fealing I left with.

All in all I thought both programs were good. I plan on doing private practice and am not looking for a place to launch an academic research career. Good luck with choices.
