Hi, I graduate in December of 09 from college out here in AZ and I was thinking about applying to the new Optometry school out here. Does anyone have any info on it and when it open or what their admission requirements are? I looked on online and I couldnt find anything.

Also, does anyone know or think the new optometry schools will be less strict on GPA requirements?

Thanks in advance.

I think we need to get rid of this mentality....

I agree. A great many people claim the extra schools will saturate the market blah blah blah but also decrease the standard of optometry as a whole. With this countinued mentality (by no means to offend the original poster) the new schools are doing just that.

Which side of the argument is true? I keep hearing about the baby boomers and their retirement which calls for the need for more OD's. Then I hear the other side which is there will be an over saturation of OD's with the new schools coming in.

You know, I keep hearing the same things and never have I heard a truly conclusive unbiased answer. Although I have opinions (which probably should be kept to Private Messages, too often this conversation sparks off dozens of high tempered remarks that lead to ill feelings) I realize I am young and have yet to even attend an optometry class let alone apply for an O.D. position.

I can say that not only will there be lots of baby boomers to take care of, there are a lot of baby boomer optometrists in need of replacements, so I see this point as an optimistic one.

Like I said above, I am still young; who am I to guess what will happen. I suppose we could use other professions as a guide. You can obtain a J.D., for instance, from one of almost 200 law schools; there are lots of people having trouble finding jobs, yet others landing jobs in multimillion dollar firms. So I suppose it all depends on how much effort is applied by the student. If this is an unfit analogy, I apologize.

Post your opinions on here, this is supposed to be an open forum. As long as people can stray away from making personal attacks and attempt to use rumors as facts; it will only help people develop their own opinions
