I am considering an active duty position in the Army through the FAP program. Any current or former Army Pathologists have an thoughts they would like to share? In particular, I'm wondering about a few things:
1. I would likely do a 3 year contract straight out of residency (I have some prior experience), how will this experience help or hurt me in the long run? (i.e. will I still need to go do a fellowship afterward? or, is the on the job experience generally good enough for entering the private work force without fellowship training?).
2. How easy is it to do one of the limited fellowships offered by the Army?
3. What is the day to day practice environment like? Decent work load? Too little? Too much?

Any comments appreciated. Thanks!

You can contact Barbara Crothers, she is in charge of Army Pathology and may answer your questions.

Don't bank on getting a fellowship in the Army.

If you are going to do this stay in the Guard and get a retirement (think its 20 years) but so what.

I think my colleagues (GeoLeoX and Kilgore Trout) adequately answered many of these questions in the military medicine forum.

Do not contact Barb Crothers about direct commission positions or FAP in Army pathology as she is no longer the "head of Army pathology". Go through the proper channels and you will be put in contact with the appropriate individuals.

Barbara Crothers is awesome..she will tell you the real deal. Regardless of whether she is the "head of army Pathology" or not....

Funny someone named Barbara is the head of something in the Army..I keep thinking Kelly's Heroes "Stop Callin me Barbara!!"

Where are the big Army hospitals now? And is there a chance you might get a solo post somewhere in Germany??

That would be absolutely killer.

I could see Ft. Leonard Wood, Knox, Leavenworth and some others being serious dog assignments while Europe and Hawaii and the big one outside of Seattle would be quite the gig.

A buddy of mine who switched from navy to army got tripler in Hawaii, and Germany

Any chance you know why your buddy switched? I'm now looking into the Navy, too.

he also had a PhD in medical history and thought he could spend some time with Virchow's archives in (the then) East Germany. Also, as a full Colonel it was a great life as germany was still considered occupied and you got a requisitioned mansion and a small house staff and driver.

Wow, that is literally living the dream. A high ranking military officer in a great conquered nation with driver and a mansion to boot...that's almost Roman Empire awesome.

that must have been some years ago...dont see that often now.

That was quite awhile ago. Berlin Wall days. Germany is no longer considered occupied. No American, British, French sectors or east Germany.
