Check the military medicine forum.

This has been extensively covered there.

thnx 🙂

No problem.

My sole suggestion is this - talk to as many people as you can that have gone the military scholarship route.

Just make sure you know what you are getting into.

Take care.

lol..forget it..i talked to my parents and they freaked out....lol...they offered to pay for my med school tuition 🙂 i made the deal..lol

My girlfriend went this route, and it worked out really well for her. She was able to do her residency in Hawaii for five years with a follow-on assignment in Germany for four years. However, she is totally discouraging me from going the same route for the following reasons:
1) Once you finish with med school, you are at the whim of the military. Due to current combat operations, you will most likely be placed into a General Medical Officer (GMO) slot doing basic medicine. This is before residency. On the upside, if you get a residency out of school, it will pay better than almost anything on the civilian side.
2) Duty locations are also at their whim. On one hand, you may get to live in beautiful Guam. On the other hand...not so beautiful Iraq.
3) Instability. If you are married, committed, or interested in homesteading in a stable location, the military is not the best option. However, if you are young and very flexible, the money can't be beat.

I suppose given this article, we all might as well sign up for the healthcare scholarship 🙁 HEALTHCARE DRAFT? Of course, this is from the NYTIMES which may mean less. None-the-less, I'm am going to keep this in the back of my mind if no scholarship shows up anywhere.

What is generaly the latest you can still get "in" on the military scholarship?

To those who like to politicize everything, I understand that this article may be an attempt to scare healthcare workers to vote for Kerry. You don't have to point that out, thanks though!

when i was looking at this scholarship, the one piece of advice that i found most often was that if you would want to be in the military anyway, this scholarship is for you...if you are doing it for the $, then you should think of some other route for medschool. in the military medicine forum, they compare your potential financial situation if you pay for medschool thru loans and if you pay for it thru the military. the end result, last i looked, make it seem that you wouldn't necessarily come out significantly ahead from the military direction to make it a purely financial investment. pick the one you want to do, regardless of the $ factor...

Good advice. I will also add that you will come out ahead if:

1. you go to an expensive school (>$20K/year in tuition).
2. you specialize in FP, OB, IM
