Army Scholarship?

I'm about to start my first year of dental school in about a month. My brother in law, who is a 4th year at UDM, keeps talking about the Army scholarship. He said that if he wasn't married or tied down to one place, he would've done the Army Scholarship in a second. I'm not too sure about the scholarship, because I don't know too much about it and what kind of experience you would get from it. I just want to see if anyone else would consider doing it or not. Also if there is someone who did the Army scholarship, if they could tell me the pros/cons of it. Thanks for your help.🙂

Before biting on a military scholarship, be sure you read all the fine print in the contract. Have it examined and critiqed by a lawyer. I recall that when this BS war in Iraq started many discharged military personnel were called back to serve 4 or 5 years after they were discharged. They all whined that they didn't know the military could do that, even though it was in their enlistment contracts. Imagine the disruption to their lives and their families!

Something else to consider: how many times have you heard news stories about veterans who have returned from Iraq suffering PTSD but diagnosed as "personality disorder" by the military to avoid paying disability pay or spending money for counselling/treatment?

Accepting a military scholarship is a business decision and should be treated as such, including consideration of whether the other party will hold up their end of the agreement. Once you sign that paper, they OWN you for years beyond the 3 or 4 year scholarship they will be providing. If they don't hold up their end of the deal, what is your recourse? If you don't hold up your end of the deal, their recourse is to throw you into a military prison. Not exactly a deal between equal parties!

$20k sounds like a lot of money, but in exchange for what? $20k is nothing compared to what you're giving up.

If you want real answers, I would move this to the military dentistry forum. there are many people there who know what the fine print says and not just going off of what "some guy" said.
