Hey everyone,

These forums have gotten me again. I havent really been on here much
since I got my acceptance to med school, and now two weeks into
the year, I have found sdn again. Right now, I dont feel behind in class,
but I find myself looking in here from time to time,
and its like undergrad all over again... ahhh!!! sdn has got me again 😀

What do you guys to keep studying instead of browsing sdn?

When I was studying for boards I actually blocked SDN on my computer. Of course I could have just unblocked it for myself, but just on principle I wouldn't do that. I've done it in the past while studying for exams - we even made a "Make mudphudwannabe productive" setting on our router so I couldn't access any of my favorite sites while I was supposed to be studying. You can do the same thing with the BlockSite add-on for Firefox. You might do well to make particular hours when SDN and other websites are "allowed" -- say for a couple hours in the evening. The internet is such an easy distraction... 🙄

I browse SDN some more. 😉

Convincing yourself that you're wasting your precious time with the rampant b!tching on these forums and realizing that the same topics are argued by the same people around the same time every year...you'll get bored of it. I

Here's a few simple steps to getting away from SDN:
  1. Admit you have a problem
  2. Close Browser window
  3. Shut Off Computer
  4. Unplug computer and remove battery
  5. Hand charger to one roomate to hide until time X
  6. Hand Battery to another roomate to hide until time X
  7. Place lifeless computer in a drawer somewhere out of sight
  8. STUDY!!!

I've actually had to do this a couple time first year and since I've been very good with ignoring SDN/Email/fantasy sports/Red Sox/Football...until I get bored. Now I just leave the lappy chained to my desk and study the old fashioned way with paper and books. Sure my notes are legible only to me, but atleast I made notes instead of reading and posting to everything on SDN.

Good luck

Luckily for me, though I browsed and lurked for about a year before joining, I didn't actually register until my MS-III year had already started (and I had already taken Step 1). Whew!

To quote Smeagol: "Leave now and never come back".

Last year all the MCW class threads had a bad habit of exploding right around M2 exams.

Meaning, most of us at MCW are pretty bad at not going on SDN. It makes for a good study break.

Makes it harder when you use your computer for studying.

I set up goals, e.g., "Go through four lectures and you can have 45 minutes doing SFA on the internet".

It works actually, and you feel like you're earned the free time.

My addiction to SDN has waned with time. I spent a lot of time here as a premed, quite a bit last year as a first year student, and haven't really spent as much time this year.

I use an Activity Tracker utility for igoogle to track how much time I'm spending doing each activity during the day. You just "clock in" and "clock out" of each activity. It really motivates me to try to beat the number of hours I study each day, and to lower the "time wasters."

Here are some categories I have set up:

Studying
Cooking & Cleaning
Eating
Talking on the Phone
Shopping
Working Out
SDN
Facebook
Surfing the web
Sleeping
Napping

So to answer your question, Activity Tracker makes me feel guilty about goofing off, and does a great job of graphing my ADHD-like lack of focus for the books :meanie:.
