I go to school at A.T. Still University in Kirksville, MO and I spoke with several admissions counselors regarding the schools processing of applications and hopefully a timetable of when applicants may hear from ASDOH to be invited for an interview. If you haven't heard from the school it is a good thing. That means that you have passed preliminary qualifications (GPA and DAT) and your application is either being reviewed/about to be reviewed by the admissions committee. Specifics that they are looking for are shadowing/observation in public health (not just private practice) and volunteering (approximately 1,000 hours). They stated that I, and hopefully other applicants, will probably hear back from them in 2-3 weeks. Just thought I would pass this info along. Good luck to everyone.

crap...i only have like 400h of volunteer work

1000 hrs seems really excessive! I hope they look into the quality and type of work you did and what you got out of it. I have about 400 and that took up a huge junk of my undergrad life

Do you know if the 1000hrs is only limited to volunteering done in college?

I don't believe that the 1000 hours is only relegated to undergraduate volunteerism. I did a lot of mission trips and children's camps in high school, and from what I was told those volunteer hours are looked at. I think that ASDOH is looking for the best all-around candidates that are geared towards public service. So they might look more heavily at an applicant with lower DAT/GPA scores, but who has amazing credentials in volunteering and shadowing. 1000 hours is a lot of voluneering hours, but don't discount the amount of time you put in for preparation, organization, and planning of the actual events.

Oh wells. I have 500+ hours from high school I could have added on.

So I feel like I'm not clear with what ASDOH looks for in volunteering. Is it 1000 hrs of dental volunteering or just any non-paid service. I have around 4000 hrs which includes cancer fundraising, religous leadership, tutoring and a little over 100 hrs of dental volunteering. Enough or do they want more dental specific community service?

I believe this is why I was selected for an interview. I (genuinely) stressed it on both my PS and secondary.

I also have less than 500 hours of volunteering experience, so yeah...their selections aren't extremely arbitrary.
