Is it weird to shadow a doctor that you're a patient of? Also, my doctor's office has a "patient portal" that allows you send messages to a physician in the office. Is it appropriate to ask for a shadowing opportunity that way since the message goes directly to them? I planned on asking if I could possibly shadow her or if she knows any physicians that would be open to having a shadow. Thanks!

I would say it's not weird to ask in general, but it is weird to ask in that particular way because they are going to assume you have a clinical issue and get irritated or just not remember to respond when you don't.

You know, I figured as much but I thought I would ask to see maybe if I was just thinking too much into it.

I went to see my doctor, then asked him while I had him cornered in the examination rooms. Said yes and got 16 hours out of it. Go for it.

Not weird at all.

I was referred to an orthopedic surgeon two years ago when I jammed my pinky out of the skin, (no breaks thankfully!!), but after the first visit with him for xrays and a post stitch, check up, when he was working on my hand, I simply asked if he allows undergrads to shaddow him in the office and OR. He asked what I study and what my plans are, I told him. He said he would love if I shaddowed and I ended up seeing some amazingly crazy orthopedic surgeries and got a cool shaddowing experience out of it!

JUST ASK!!!

I'd do it even if it wasn't for my application. It's always a good thing to shadow physicians from various specialties in order to get a general idea of what physicians do.

Shadowing is pretty fun to be honest.

It's not weird, I asked my doc if I could shadow and got offered a scribe position! I asked while in the exam room for something unrelated but if you have no reason to see your doctor I would probably call the office and tell them you are interested in shadowing your doctor and then leave your phone and email address.
