Quick question: I had an interview on Friday and it just went terribly. The interviewer and I just didn't click. I really didn't think that she got to know me as an applicant. Can I request another interview or should I just bite the bullet and let it be?

I am not sure the school will agree to another interview but it could be worth a try.

I think that you can normally only ask for a second interview if the interviewer asked you an illegal question (are you gay, are you pregnant, are you Muslim/Christian/Buddhist?). Don't psych yourself out too much about a bad interview. Anecdotally, I had a HORRIBLE interview at UPitt, and it didn't stop me from an acceptance.

I don't think this would work, and if you are a borderline candidate, such a request might tip the balance against you. Sometimes you don't 'click' with people -- that is part of life, but hopefully you are professional and articulate enough to express yourself to someone who is not going to be your BFF.

Some of the interviews I've been to allowed us to request for another interview (within the same day) if your original interview went awfully wrong or you felt you did not get to show them your true potentials. So maybe if you had talked to the dean of admissions on that very day after your interview, he/she might have arranged for a second interview. But I think they take both into considerations.

I say ask for one. The worst they could tell you is NO. just say that the interviewer hit on you and you felt very uncomfortable when talking to them. They will reinterview you to avoid a potential lawsuit.

My good friend interviewed last year at UCLA. Her faculty interviewer was disinterested... She had not even opened her application (it was in a sealed manilla envelope) so she didn't know what questions to ask... She ended the interview after 20 minutes.

My friend agonized over this for a week, and then she called the admissions office. Within a few days, they arranged a second interview with a medical student. It didn't seem like it was a big deal to accomplish.

She ended up getting waitlisted and later rejected at UCLA. It's all good... now she's enjoying life as an MS1 at NYU...

Sometimes things happen for a reason is my belief...

Good luck!

Ask if you want but don't lie (jeesh Medvac).

Really, I just want to say "that's life." You don't have to click or be liked by everyone for them to understand you. Even though you may not have gotten positive feedback and reassurance from your interviewer, that is no excuse to not have portrayed yourself positively. That's your responsibility, not theirs. Some interviewers ask questions and the applicant answers stupidly... oops! And others don't ask anything good at all, but it's still an interview so you have to make sure you push yourself without their help. Some interviewers are going to read your application and have a preconcieved idea of who you are. If you show up and don't fit their picture, you might really piss them off (as in my case). In my case, the interviewer even ended up assuming false/bad things about me and insulting my dad. Did I ask for another interview? No. I took it as a sign that the school was not my type of place. I don't want to interact with people like that. And as a faculty member she might have known that I wasn't at the best school for me...

👍 Similar experience I had interviewing at a certain Top 10 school with a history of neglecting their community. I asked my interviewer if the students were involved in community service, adn she told me "you know, if you want to work with poor people, maybe to should apply to schools in Detroit or Chicago." Bad interview? You bet. But it sure taught me that I didn't want to go to school there and is making my decision process a lot easier.

wow. what school was that.😍
I hate poor people...they are always dirty and disqusting..:barf:

You know some people dont even get ONE chance to prove that they are a good candidate in an interview. So suck it up, in life things are not always easy and they are not always fair. Dont ruin it for everyone else by wasting the med schools time just because you couldnt prove yourself with the chance you were given. I have no doubt that maybe the interviewer was rude or you just didnt like them, but what happens when you dont like your patient, do you just give them a crappy physical? Maybe your interview didnt go as bad as you think, most people that finish an interview think they did bad but do very well.

Whoah, down boy. Is it just me or are people getting particularly vicious on this board lately? Chock it up to good ol' Holiday Cheer, I guess😀 .

It's going to be a waste of time. Schools barely have time to interview everyone they want to see once, let alone twice. Unless there was some egregious wrong that occurred, the interview is over and done with. FWIW the goal for schools is not to see you at your most polished, it is at least in part to see how you perform under the stress of the one interview.

The LAW has spoken!

I would not ask for a second interview. You've had your shot and your current reasoning is far from a good reason. I've seen other threads where other people have requested second interviews, been granted them simply for fear of lawsuits, they were formalities and done simply to prevent legal action. The student was rejected.

Agreed. I think the only time to ask for a second interview is at a school where they ENCOURAGE it in the event that something doesn't fit. I went to a school, where they are very happy to give a student a 3rd interview and encourage it in case the student didn't feel he got to show his true potential.

I agree with the poster that said it's YOUR responsiblity to show who you are regardless of whether your interviewer read your file or not. I know I had to do that at 2 schools so far and bring up all my prior grade issues and whatnot. It would have looked bad if my interviewer had read my file later and said...hmmm....WTF...I wish she had explained this.

I think the only time to ask for the second/third interview is the day of. If you have to agnoize over it for days, then it couldn't have gone that badly. It should be instinctual. Next time, just ask the day of.

Just because you couldn't prove yourself?

Just wait till your first interview...don't judge a situation that you are unfamiliar with. I don't mean to be rude, but you are sounding pretty condescending in this post and you have no reason to, nor can you sympathize with the OP.

I agree on both points....I had a horrific, horrific NYU interview, including a good ol' illegal religion question/comment, and got in...so you never know.

Yes this is true, I have never had an interview. This is why it makes me angry because I believe that other people should have a chance at interviewing as well, instead of someone trying to get as many interviews as they can in order to find an interviewer that thinks they are impressive. I was not being mean, even though after reading it again I guess I come off that way. I just think that asking for a second interview for that reason is really selfish, sorry if no one else feels that way. Anyways the OP probably did fine, like I said before, so I wasnt being all discouraging.
