I am a junior and planning to apply next June. I have a professor that I want to ask to write me a letter. Should I ask him about the letter this semester or wait until next semester right before I apply? Also, how does the letter get from the professor to the schools I apply to? Thanks for any help.

Ask him now and let him write it now or next spring. Make sure you get a personal email address in case if he leaves the school (happen to one of my buddies and he can't get in touch with his professor anymore). Just cross your fingers he doesn't get run over by a bus until next June.

On AADSAS you enter his info and the system will automatically send him an email where he can submit the rec. Just make sure you confirm that he actually submitted since professors are notorious for forgetting to do recs and emails going to the spam folder.

I think you should ask as soon as you get the grade. That way, he has a fresh memory of you. Then you can store the LOR on Interfolio and have it ready next year.

From there, Interfolio will send to AADSAS, which will forward to all your schools. I think this is one of the better options because you won't have to ask that professor again in case something gets lost.

Thanks for the help. Interfolio looks like a good option to me. I plan to ask for a letter soon either next week or after I get my final grade.

Another thing to look into is whether or not your university has a document service. My university offers one through the career center, and it is actually cheaper than interfolio and my professors were more comfortable with the university's service. Good luck with your application process!

Now: Become good buddies with him/her
Next Semester: (Jan or Feb) Ask for letter. This is months early!!
Late in the Semester: (April/May): If nothing is submitted by then, give a friendly reminder!
