Asking PDs: What is the limit on MD/PhD students in a given PI's lab in your program?

My MST program is developing a policy to limit the number of MD/PhD in a given PI's lab at a time and is trying to figure out what a good number of students would be. I have heard 3-4 is pretty common but am curious to hear what different programs have in place and how they calculated the number for their respective policies.

First I've heard of this one, no such policy at the program where I'm involved.

I've met with a few programs and each school is a little different. One program I know of tries to limit to 4 years, where the 4th year is really just preparing for defense and sending paper out for publication. But they are also flexible and will try to provide support to you if you need an extra year or two, it highly depends on your field of interest and your committee is the vibe I got.
