I am starting my first practicum/internship/field placement in a few weeks and when I was talking to the director about what my responsibilities would be he said as follows: Until you get comfortable we'll have you do assessments and then hand the clients off to a therapist. Can somebody explain to me what "assessments" consist of? I only just realized I'm not exactly sure what it means.

Since you are an MSW student, I am thinking that they are referring to what I have heard called a Psychosocial which is more of a gathering of the relevant background info. The following are usually some of the categories: Family history, educational hx, occupational hx, treatment hx, abuse hx, etc.
Oh, I just remembered social workers doing something called a needs assessment, too. Which I imagine is just what it sounds like - finding out what the patient needs and then figuring out what services are available to meet those needs.
