Question for the dentists out there:

When you took your FIRST associate position, are you going in there with the mentality that you are just trying to learn the ropes and getting your feet wet? (how to run a business, learn some new techniques, etc) or are you going in there w/ the mindset of eventually buying that practice?

From what I've heard and read, it seems like many new graduates go through several associateships before landing at one that they are even serious of taking over.

Both. You will learn something from every practice. Positive or negative, it will help you decide if you want to pursue more than just associateship in that practice. I worked in an office that I planned to buy in 2 years. The senior dentist was telling me that Sargenti paste is the best endo fill in the world (the stuff is banned I think). I lasted 6 weeks... One day at a time. Get the associateship and then after a few years you can pursue more or move on to another practice.

Would you necessesarily marry the first person you ever date?? Maybe yea, maybe no. Just like Thisisit said, you need to go into an associateship with all of your eyes and ears open, you may find its the right one for you, you may find that its time to find a different associateship.

BTW Thisisit, maybe that Doc you were refrring to is one of the ones that is keeping the Sargenti board alive over on Dentaltown's forums :wow: 😀

My first associateship lasted 8 weeks. The senior doc was a smooth talker but a poor planner. Its pretty sad when I can count on one hand the number of patients I saw.

It was a learning experience - I had to learn how to deal with people who are "mean"/ dishonest; especially when he didn't want to honor the contract because I found a new job within the same week.

I also learned what questions I should have asked and was able to see the dynamics of a poorly run office!

Is seeing 12-16 patients per day on average a bit on the light side??

I hope this is not against board rules but don't be suckered into the Sargenti Paste "save the world story". It has caused severe and permanent damage to patients and will only get you into legal trouble. Dentists who use this stuff rarely tell their patients. If you have something to hide, its because you know you are doing something wrong. Dental Town has removed the Sargenti thread.
