Hi everyone,

I’m looking to establish a record of good grades in order to apply to medical school. ASU offers a degree in Biochemistry (online) that also allow you to do labs in person. Is this a good idea? How will medical schools view this? I have to work and the program is cheaper which is why this program appeals to me vs an in class program.

Each medical school is different, so prior to doing this make sure you contact schools and ask if they accept online prerequisites. That way you have an idea of which schools to apply to and which schools not to apply to.

Good luck!

I cannot recommend this.

Do you see a time in the future or in certain cases it would be acceptable? I believe USF has an online SMP?

I made the decision to not do any online programs because 1. each school has its regulations on online coursework and 2. I think the stigma of online programs still exists especially since testing/evaluations aren’t done in person. I didn’t want to subject myself to extra scrutiny. I’ve seen a couple SMPs offering an online alternative as well. Also, a program at a brick and mortar program will help you to build better relationships.

Eh I’ve done a few online courses including science and the proctored exams made it more legitimate in my opinion. And they were not easy by any means. I suppose my thought is if medical schools don’t require attendance and just showing up for an exam, what makes that any different than an online program or course?

I totally agree, but I’m not sure that’s the way older, more traditional programs look at things.

Have you considered retaking specific courses to show that you have matured academically?

Also, if you do an online degree, you will have to retake many gen-ed courses such as literature, writing, etc.

I actually decided to go to a brick and mortar school. The acceptance of online prereqs varies too widely.
