hello,

So I'm interested in applying for Podiatry, except really worried about the requirements to get in... My GPa is only a 3.2 right now, and I havnt takent the MCATs yet. I was mostly wondering if any of ya'll know whether or not being a University athlete and involved in other extra groups are considered in the admission process. THanks much 🙂

I think being an athlete is looked positively upon...particularly if you can play a sport and keep a good GPA. I did JV lax and soccer along with varsity tennis and at my most recent interview, the admins seemed pretty pleased/impressed with this. The asked about how I could do these things while maintaining a good GPA.

It's never going to hurt you. You certainly want to bring up your life, team, and leadership experiences in the interview and in your personal statement.

I don't think ECs will ever make up for bad gpa/MCAT on the grad school app, but if you have an average or better academic profile, then ECs are a spectacular addition that help present you as a well rounded applicant who can multi-task. Provided you continue to make solid marks and do well on MCAT, your gpa shouldn't limit you at any schools.

For starters GPA does not equal intelligence or future success level. If you are smart and ready to work hard then you will do well regardless of GPA.

If your grades are poor b/c you partied too hard, that is a negative in my book. I am not saying that there isn't time for that, but if you selected having fun over being committed to your educationa nd future, I'd have to question your motivation and maturity.

If I were on the selection committee, I'd ask what exactly has changed and why the change in priorities at this stage in the game.

Then I would want to see some form of proof ie volunteering and other forms of non self absorbed actions.

Also I would see if there was a change in grades from freshman to senior.

Being an athlete is a plus IMO, if you feel that your GPA is not as high as it should be and it is because you partied too hard, maybe be honest with the selection board but tell them your priorities have changed and be willing to back it up with proof.

Honestly, I'd rather see an honest and mature candidate than a liar and deceptive one any day of the week.
