but can anyone speak to why touro ca besides location. is it really easier to get a residency in cali?

for example, lets take general surgery for example. would it be easier to get a residency in cali if i attend touro as opposed to kcumb?

I think KCUMB is fairly objectively the 'better' school in the most traditional sense - it's very old and well established with plenty of connections and research opportunities. BUT you might go see Touro and really love the atmosphere there. You never know until you check it out.

If cost is an issue for you, Touro and the Bay Area are going to be your most expensive option. That was my primary reason for not submitting their secondary. You can always live in that area when you're making the big bucks someday.

Do you have to live in Vallejo if you attend Tuoro-CA? second semester? second year? rotations?

I've spoken to people who have gone to other DO schools who lived in the more metropolitan area while attending their DO/MD school. Example: Someone I met who went to NSU said that some people chose to live in Miami over Ft. Lauderdale area. I also was told by someone who went to Western-U-Lebanon, that some people chose to live in Portland over Lebanon.

You can live wherever you want if you have transportation. Especially at DO schools where rotations tend to be a little scattered, there is no real reason to be pinned to where the school is.

In this particular case I think the issue is that all of California is pretty expensive, especially compared to Missouri.

I'm from nor-Cal. Vallejo is not a very nice area and is also extremely expensive. I had an interview at Touro-CA and canceled it as soon as I had another acceptance just because of it's location.

I also have heard it coined as an "expensive ghetto" but you can live farther away in a nicer place just be prepared to pay even more $ for COL and transportation. Location is a big factor for me, as it seems to be for you, so I would think long and hard where you see yourself at. Consider the school quality but just as equally how happy you will be wherever you decide to reside for the next 2 years at least (may change location depending on rotations in 3rd year).

Living in SF sounds like the moooove though. If you don't have a whip, is there a way to bus/train to school?

There's a ferry to and from San Fran to Vallejo, as well as a bus when the ferry is not running, I believe. The hard part is getting from the ferry station to the school. My guess is, no matter what, you'll have to arrange a ride at some point of the journey with someone. Car pooling would be nice because you wouldn't have to drive every time and could split the cost of transportation. But I tried out the ferry when I was there, and it was great! I know the city has train transportation called the BART, but I'm not sure what the nearest station to the school is

Not sure exactly. If I recall correctly, attendance is not mandatory and there are recorded lectures. Attendance for labs is mandatory of course. It would be nice to talk to some students who have done this. Commuting about an hour 3x a week I think would be doable.

I know, right? The Bay Area is awesome, but if your parents are not footing the bill for school, it would be a tough situation financially. I can't imagine racking up even more debt than I'll have with living cheaply in the rural South.

From what I've seen of their class schedule, Touro-CA's mandatory classes are T-Th, so it's conceivable to only come to campus on those days. The rest are recorded.

I just visited Touro-CA as an interested applicant and really liked the school. The school is about an hour drive from SF and maybe a 30 min drive from Berkeley, where I've heard some people also commute from. If you take the ferry from SF, you would still need someone to drive you to campus (I think it's about 2 miles away); otherwise, you could take a bike and bike the last stretch of the commute. Many students live on the island where there's not too much to do, but the Bay Area is expensive no matter where you are (SF is literally the most expensive place to live in the US, surpassing Manhattan this year). Personally I'd rather live somewhere where the winters are 55F at the lowest, then pay less and live in a place where frozen water falls from the sky four months out of the year and you could literally die from exposure...

Lectures are videotaped, but labs are mandatory. There is a definite emphasis on OMM. It's a small campus and not very new or nice, but the students I spoke to really recommended it based on the tight-knit student body and helpful faculty. I asked students what commonalities the incoming class had, and the answers I got most often were that their families are local and that they all had high MCAT scores.

If you're already in the Bay Area, I would really recommend shadowing a student/OMM Lab for a day. It's a really great experience and you get to speak to the faculty and students yourself. I had a good experience and will be applying this upcoming cycle.

The absolute best. We have classmates from Oklahoma, Texas, Memphis, and they all say the bbq is amazing. I suggest Jack Stacks to start. Then Joes, then Q39. LCs BBQ is ok for the rugged back doorsy experience but thats about it.

I'm from San Diego. If I was given a choice between continuing medical school or getting a lifetime supply of California burritos and crane asada fries...I'd have a really really hard time making that decision.

Tourists-CA looks and feels like a Caribbean school. I visited the place and just sent in a secondary as a courtesy because they kept bugging me about it. I have met many attendings who said that they're not overall impressed with the quality of Touro students.

CA is overrated. If you want to practice in the West Coast, you should consider Seattle and Portland.

I LOVE Bay Area, it is one of the premium areas in the whole country to live! That being said, Vallejo is a bit of a black eye, it is more ghetto and offers almost no meaningful amenities. I would suggest living in Pinole or even Berkeley.
Regarding the school, it will shock you when you first see it. It's on a seemingly abandoned naval shipyard island, and even the campus itself is composed almost entirely of abandoned buildings. Every building is a uniform bleak whitewash, with peeling paint being an architectural staple. It's eerie, and the facilities are laughable right down to the super old-school basketball court.
However, despite all this the administration puts on quite a show. They are very friendly and welcoming, and seem extremely intellectually sharp. Perhaps the sharpest of any school I interviewed at. The students are vibrant and cohesive and seem to spend a lot of time together. Board scores are high and California matches are abundant. In short, this school has everything you need, but absolutely NOTHING you don't.
It's annoying that you have to pay a whopping $5 toll every single time you even cross the bridge to enter Vallejo. And you'll want to live somewhere else because if you're going to pay high rent it may as well be somewhere pleasant. But if you are the type who can grin and bear it for the sake of a secure future, this is definitely your school.

Man thats just scratching the surface. There is surf and turf burrito from Lucha libre, tacos from tacos el Gordo near Chula vista, pollo asado and christian fries at vallartas and alligator burgers at bareback grill in pacific beach!! UCSD alum here and super well fed daily!😍

I'm thinking I'm not going to interview.. i liked kcu and i figure the lower tuition, lower housing price, and more established school is enough reason.

and i will just tell myself that i won't have time to enjoy SF anyway
