Hello!

I've heard that medical schools are very wary of applicants who are accepted into medical school one year, decline the offer, and then reapply the next year. I understand why this is the case and agree with the reasoning.

My question is related but slightly different, let me explain my situation:

I applied during this last cycle and received 6 interview invites. I was rejected at 1 school and waitlisted at the other 5. Over the passed month, my life has changed dramatically. There has arisen several factors that will make it difficult for me to attend medical school this fall. I have been informed by most of the schools I applied to that they do not offer deferment to students that are accepted from the waitlist. I still very much desire to be a doctor and do not want to do anything that would jeopardize my potential to be a legitimate applicant in the future, but I simply want to know my options and the consequences choosing that path.

If I accept a position on a waitlist and am subsequently offered an acceptance to that school, am I able to decline the acceptance? Does AMCAS record whether or not an offer was EXTENDED or if it was ACCEPTED and subsequently declined?

Thanks!

I don't know if this will work, but you could perhaps take the acceptance, matriculate, and then ask for a leave of absence.

Unfortunately, life sometimes throws us a curveball, if not an actual beanball.

To play it safe, you can withdraw from the wait list position.

Then reapply when your fortunes improve.

You've got three adcoms giving you the same advice.. I think you know what you have to do. I know it sucks.

I'm sorry for whatever issues have come up in your life, but good luck the next time you apply and I wish you the best in general.

If you absolutely cannot attend medical school this fall, then you should withdraw from the waitlists of the schools that do not offer deferment. However, speaking from a student and applicant experience, I couldn't imagine wanting to having to go through that whole ordeal again. Do you think you have a good shot at being accepted from the waitlist for those schools? What circumstances make it impossible for you to do medical school this year?
