Anyone attending the Harvard Extension School Information session on Wednesday (27th)?

I'm flying in from Atlanta, and plan on attending and doing some sight-seeing for the weekend to determine if it is the program for me. I'm a software engineer, originally from South Africa. Anyone else doing similar?

Also, I'd appreciate any recommendations on hotel/B&B recommendations from people who know the area. I'm looking for somewhere near to the Harvard area -- I've never visited before.

Thanks!

I'll be there.

If you want to stay right in Harvard Square, there are a few options. Harvard has it's own little hotel right on Mass Ave (it may be called the Inn at Harvard, but I really don't know). There's also another small place right in the square called the Harvard Square Hotel on Mt. Auburn street (which may be your best deal. The Charles Hotel (across the street from the Harvard square hotel) is probably the biggest hotel in the square and is nice. It's on Bennet street.

Any of these hotels are right in Harvard Square and put you minutes from Harvard yard and minutes to the Charles river. Be warned though...we just got three feet of snow, so getting around for the next week is going to be tough. But Harvard has a T stop so you can venture to downtown Boston with ease...oh and it's freezing cold right now!

Good luck,

Thanks for the info. Darn the weather! We're having sunshine here.

I was thinking also of renting a car and taking a drive around the countryside. Is this inadviseable under current conditions? Any advice on what's worth seeing while I'm in MA?

Also, if I attend in the fall I am planning on driving my car up to Boston. Is having a car a good idea (parking, licensing, etc) -- or should I, just rely on public transport as one would do, say, in NY?

Much appreciated.

I too will be attending! I am staying at the Hampton Inn Cambridge and taking the T to Harvard Square. I got a room for $89 on Orbitz.com if you cant find anything reasonable. I love NY and Boston but absolutely HATE driving in the city. Especially with the nasty weather, I'd say don't bother renting a car, take public transport like NY.

Well I guess you could rent a car and go exploring, but you should get something with all-wheel drive. This has been the worst storm in 25 years and while the roads should be cleared a bit more by the end of the week, there's still snow everywhere! The Mayor of Boston basically closed the city for today and tomorrow.

There's lots of great stuff to see while in and around Boston and throughout NH and VT, but you'll mostly just see snow right now. My neighbors were snowboarding down my street yesterday and lots of people are cross-country skiing in the streets. So, unless you're intrepid, you may want to pick a few things to see right in the city and leave it at that (observatory on top of the Prudential building, Newbury street for shopping if you're into that, a lot of folks visit Harvard square but you'll be there... 😕 ).

To your car question, when not in the aftermath of a blizzard, having a car would be great if you were coming to HArvard. Parking would stink if you lived right in the square but few do because the cost is astronomical. However Boston is a real car town (not like NYC). The T will get you around, but it's not as good as the subways in NYC or the Tube in London. Plus, the proximity of the beach and the mountains when living in Boston makes having a car a real bonus and as my wife and I sometimes joke (after skiing for a weekend), the best part of living in Boston is getting out.

And to add insult to injury we are expected to get another couple in the middle of the week. 😡 I need a break from all this shoveling. 👎 The snow isn't going to melt at all, it's going to be cold the entire week.

I know...Did you have class scheduled for today at UMass...they cancelled. I only have Tues/Thurs classes but was going to buy books today.

I am SOOO sick of shoveling and snow-blowing...and then the plows push it all back!!! All I know is I'm going to med school somewhere warm!

Good luck

Thanks for the info guys. If you can do anything about the weather before I arrive...
