Attending vs Physician

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
This is just speculation, but I believe the stank of a physicians ball sack overwhelms that of an attending's ball sack (often by 100 fold).

What is the point of this thread? (I mean no dis-respect) hah.

Yeah, attendings are physicians, while residents and fellows are as well. All attendings are physicians, while not all physicians are attendings. Since you made this point already yourself, what is the point of this thread?

there was confusion on another thread.

i was not sure if attending meant a doc at a certain type of location.

so it i was in PP, id still be an attending, correct?

I usually take attending to mean a post residency physician at an academic or teaching hospital. I don't usually refer to private practice or hospitalists as attending. Usually the word is just used to maintain clarity of position when residents are about as they are technically physicians too

Traditionally an attending physician was the one who "attended" to the care of the patient; the one who was primarily responsible.

It is someone who has finished their residency training but does not require teaching of medical students or residents, but that is a common usage of the term.

PP physicians can also teach medical students and residents; it does not require academic hospital employment to do so.

In a nutshell:

all attendings are physicians; the term is used to designate someone who has finished training

not all physicians are attendings; the term is used to designate someone who has finished medical school and has their terminal degree

Hear that at Mayo attendings are also called "Consultants"

Attendings can act as consultants, for example, an internist can be consulted for a psychiatric or surgical admission.

Or do you mean ALL attendings are consultants? How do they differentiate attendings from actual consultants then?

Good question. My understanding was every attending was called a "consultant" in the UK.
