I'm not talking about belittling someone or putting them in their place. I'm just saying you don't have to take trash talk from someone. In the situation I was referring to, I'd initially apologized, but then I just walked away while she was still blustering about me using the wrong phone.

I had a similar situation once. I picked up the phone once, thinking it was the person I had paged, and answered, and it turned out to be the nursing supervisor, who proceeded to berate me for "not answering the phone the correct way." Even though I initially apologized, she continued to rant, so I just hung up on her right in the middle of her lecture.

Did I mention that this supervisor was the type that thought that residents should stand outside the nurses station, while only nurses could sit inside it to complete their paperwork? She seriously told all of us residents to stand outside the nurses station once when she was visiting the floor!

I agree with this.

It's amazing to me how freely students use the term "a-hole" or "d-bag" or "rude" to describe a fellow student, another resident, or an attending. I'm convinced that majority of med students don't have a thick skin, are too sensitive, and can't tell the difference between an "aggressive" personality and somebody who is truly malicious and wants the students to roll over and die.

Experienced the same thing from a former Chief at my program....it was cool for her to 'put on her big girl panties' and throw her weight around (which was considerable)....but to have someone look her square in the eyes with a can-do attitude coupled with a no-$hit demeanor and present a patient --- she didn't know whether to $hit or go blind...I defecate you zero ounces.....Some of these people need to grow the eff up .....I vacillate between trying to be touchy-feelie-sensitive with them and play the appropriate 'stomach and paws' in the air with them....usually get frustrated at getting run over with no recourse and then the other JPB comes out.....and usually things get a little interesting for a while....
